DH David Ortiz Agrees to New Contract with Red Sox

G Fiume/Getty Images(BOSTON) -- Designated hitter David Ortiz and the Boston Red Sox agreed to a new two-year contract on Monday. The deal is worth at least $26 million, according to ESPNBoston.com.

This past season, the 36-year-old Ortiz batted .318 with 23 home runs and 60 RBIs in 90 games played. He missed all but one game after suffering a strained right Achilles on July 16th.

Oritz won two World Series championships with the Red Sox, in 2004 and 2007.

David Ortiz Hoping to Return to the Red Sox in 2013

Al Messersschmidt/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The Boston Red Sox have found a new manager for next season, now they're focused on bringing back designated hitter David Ortiz.

Ortiz has spent the past 10 seasons with the Red Sox, and won two World Series titles during that span. He is set to be a free agent this winter, but is hoping to return to Boston.

"Hopefully we get it done by the end of the World Series," Ortiz told ESPN's Joe McDonald. "I know what's fair and I know guys my age aren't going to get three-, four-, five-year deals anymore, so I want to play two more and if things go good I'll continue to play."

John Tomase of the Boston Herald reports that Ortiz is hoping for a two-year deal between $25 million and $30 million. Last winter, he signed a one-year deal with the team worth $14.5 million despite his quest for a long-term deal.

Ortiz was limited to just 90 games last season as he dealt with an Achilles tendon injury. Despite the injury, Ortiz still hit 23 home runs and drove in 60 runs while batting .318.

The 36-year-old Ortiz has hit 343 home runs since joining the Red Sox.

Red Sox Place David Ortiz on DL

Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images(BOSTON) -- The Boston Red Sox put designated hitter David Ortiz on the disabled list on Monday. The 36-year-old slugger will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection on his strained right Achilles.

"I had it done before and I believe in that big time," Ortiz said of the injection in which he also received in 2007 for a knee injury. "We didn't get it done [earlier] because we thought that wasn't needed in my case, but at this stage, at this point, seems like I gotta get through it. When I heard them talking about it this morning it made me happy."

The eight-time All-Star was hitting .318 with 23 home runs, 60 RBIs before suffering the injury.

"There's nothing that I need to have fixed for now," Ortiz said on Monday. "That's part of the reason I want to be careful with it because I don't want to get to the point where I'm playing sore. If you're sore you know that your body is telling you something. And if you continue [to play hurt] then it causes you to have surgery."

Ortiz has said the shot works 60 to 70 percent of the time, but would not say whether or not he'd return this season.

Red Sox's David Ortiz Defends Bobby Valentine

Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- As the Boston Red Sox continue to slide in the 2012 season, Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz has been on the disabled list since July 17 watching from the dugout.

Ortiz is suffering from a strained right Achilles tendon but was able to voice his opinion on first-year manager Bobby Valentine's job.

"I think Bobby's doing great, man," Ortiz said on Friday. "He had to deal with so many things through the season, a lot of guys' injuries. I guarantee if we don't have that many guys go onto the DL this year, history would be different this year, and all the talks and negativity that have come out against him, I don't think it would be there."

Ortiz believes that when it comes down to it, it's the players on the field who should take more of the blame for their rough season.

"Because what does it mean if you're playing well? He can't manage the team and at the same time go and play for us. All he can do is make moves and make decisions. But if you don't have your squad out there providing what you expect -- because of injuries or bad games or whatever -- I don't think people should be looking at it like it's his fault we struggled the way we have this year."

Before being placed on the disabled list, Ortiz was batting .316 with 23 home runs and an on-base percentage of .414.

David Ortiz's Return Likely Delayed

Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images(BOSTON) -- It was thought that Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz would return from the disabled list Wednesday, but it's starting to seem that won't happen.

Ortiz, who has been out since July 18 with a right Achilles strain, canceled his baseball-related activities for the second consecutive day Monday, because of soreness in his right heel.

"I don't know if it was ever a goal," Red Sox skipper Bobby Valentine said on expecting Ortiz back Wednesday. "Whenever he's ready. He's running in the pool and we'll take it from there. He's not far away but I don't know that Wednesday's the magical day. It will be sometime soon."

Ortiz is hitting .316 with 23 home runs, 58 RBIs and a .414 on-base percentage this season.

David Ortiz Hits 400th Home Run

Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images(OAKLAND, Calif.) -- Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz hit his 400th career home run during the Sox 3-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics Thursday.

Ortiz becomes the 49th player in MLB history to hit 400.

"I know at some point in my career when I'm not playing baseball, I'll look at it from the outside and be like woah...guess I had a good career," Ortiz said when talking about the milestone hit. "To look at it right now, it's just another home run that you put out there."

Ortiz had been stuck at 399 since July 27. He now has 22 home runs for the season.

David Ortiz Isn't Having Much Fun Playing in Boston

G Fiume/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz is having one of the best seasons of his career, but he isn't having much fun doing it.

Ortiz is once again one of the best sluggers in the American League and the team is second in the Majors in runs scored, but they are in fourth place in the division along with reports of discontent in the organization.

"Not really. Too much s***, man," Ortiz told CSNNE.com when asked if he was having fun this season. "People need to leave us alone and let us play baseball. It's starting to become the s*** hole it used to be. Playing here used to be so much fun. Now, every day is something new, not related to baseball. People need to leave us alone. Every day is something new, some more drama, some more s***. I'm tired of that, man. I'm here to play baseball, man."

The 36-year-old hitter has been on both of the Red Sox World Series teams during their recent run of success. This year he's hitting .310 with 18 home runs and 49 runs batted in.

Red Sox and David Ortiz Avoid Arbitration, Settle on One-Year Contract

Elsa/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Big Papi will be staying in bean town for at least one more season. Designated hitter David Ortiz has agreed to a one-year contract worth $14.575 million.

The agreement came just before a scheduled arbitration hearing between the two sides. Ortiz was asking for $16.5 million, but the Red Sox were offering $12.65 million, so they decided to meet down the middle. Ortiz made $12.5 million last season with Boston.

The 36-year-old slugger enjoyed one of his better seasons in recent years in 2011. He batted .309, hit 29 home runs, and drove in 96 runs. He has spent the past nine seasons with the Red Sox, winning the World Series with the team back in 2004 and 2007.
