Brad Lidge Designated for Assignment

Major League Baseball(WASHINGTON) -- The Washington Nationals designated pitcher Brad Lidge for assignment Sunday.

The 35-year-old reliever signed a one-year $1 million contract with the team before the season.

Lidge, who has 225 career saves, went on the disabled list in late April to have sports hernia surgery. He returned to action on June 8, but could never get it together. In 11 appearances this season, he had a 9.64 ERA to go along with 11 walks and 10 strikeouts.

Besides his time with the Nationals, Lidge has pitched for the Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies. In 2008, he didn't blow a single save in the regular season or the postseason, helping the Phillies to their first World Series title since 1980.
