Florida Ends 2014 Season on High Note, Top ECU in the Birmingham Bowl

iStockPhoto/Thinkstock(BIRMINGHAM, Ala.) -- After a disappointing regular season, the Florida Gators have some momentum heading into 2015 after defeating East Carolina 28-20 in the Birmingham Bowl on Saturday.

Gators quarterback Treon Harris didn't have his best game of the season, but he was good enough as he completed five of 11 passes for 123 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

With the Pirates closing in, Harris threw an 86-yard touchdown to Ahmad Fulwood to give Florida a 28-14 lead.

But arguably the story of the game was when Harris left the game in the third quarter with a leg injury. In came junior quarterback and former starter Jeff Driskel.

On Saturday, new Gators head coach Jim McElwain confirmed that Driskel has asked for and received his release from his scholarship.

"That's up to him," McElwain said on Driskel's possible return. "We all have choices, and I'm not going to hold him hostage."

Driskel went eight of 17 for 48 yards in what was likely his final game with the team.

East Carolina Upsets (17) Virginia Tech, 28-21

Streeter Lecka/Getty Images(BLACKSBURG, Va.) -- Coming off a thrilling win over Ohio State last weekend, 17th ranked Virginia Tech suffered an equally devastating loss on Saturday after they were upset by East Carolina, 28-21.

With the win, the Pirates snapped a five-game losing streak to ranked opponents. It was their first victory over a ranked team since 2009 when they beat then-No. 18 Houston.

East Carolina quarterback Shane Carden was arguably the player of the game as he completed 23 out of 47 passes for 427 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions.

Carden's 427 passing yards were the third-most ever allowed by Virginia Tech in a single game.

The biggest play of the game happened with just 16 seconds left in the contest when Carden ran in the game-winning touchdown on the one-yard line to seal the win.

Titans Release RB Chris Johnson

Andy Lyons/Getty Images(NEW YORK) --  The Tennessee Titans have released running back Chris Johnson on Friday, the team announced in a statement.

Johnson, 28, spent the first six seasons of his NFL career with the Titans.  He ran for a career-high 2,006 yards in 2009 and is one of only six players to run for at least 1,000 yards in his first six seasons.  In 2013, he averaged a career-worst 3.9 yards a carry and didn't have a run longer than 30 yards.

"As an organization, we want to thank Chris for his contributions to the Titans," general manager Ruston Webster said in a release. "Chris produced many memorable moments, broke franchise records and was durable over his six-year career with our team. We have had an open dialogue with Chris' agent, Joel Segal, over the last few weeks, and we appreciate the patience and professionalism they have shown throughout this process.

"We made an effort to trade Chris but were unable to do so. We wish Chris the best and thank him for the six seasons he spent with us."

Johnson was selected by the Titans with the 24th pick in the 2008 NFL draft out of East Carolina.  He was due to make $8 million in 2014.
