Oilers Hire Peter Chiarelli as Team President

Dave Sandford/NHLI via Getty Images(EDMONTON, Alberta) -- The Edmonton Oilers appointed Peter Chiarelli as the team's new president of hockey operations and general manager on Friday.

“I am honored to join such a great organization with a long history of success. There is a strong, young core here with good complementary players,” Chiarelli said. “I hope to bring it to the next level with a measured approach. Daryl Katz (Chairman) and Bob Nicholson (Team CEO) have a great vision here for the team and Rogers Place. I am very excited to be a part of it.”

At the end of this regular season, Chiarelli was fired as the Boston Bruins general manager. Chiarelli spent nine seasons in Boston leading the team to two Stanley Cup Final appearences, including one championship in 2011.

The Oilers finished last season 28th in points but still won the draft lottery. They are expected to take highly touted prospect Connor McDavid with the top pick.

Oilers Win NHL Draft Lottery

iStockPhoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- For the fourth time in the last six years, the Edmonton Oilers have the first overall pick in the NHL Draft.

The Oilers won the 2015 draft lottery in Toronto Saturday, despite having the third best odds to win the pick.

The Oilers are now expected to select center Connor McDavid, who is being called the best prospect since Sidney Crosby.

The 18-year-old McDavid scored 44 goals and dished out 76 assists in 47 games for the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League, this season.

The Oilers used their previous first picks on Taylor Hall (2010), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2011), and Nail Yakupov (2012).

The Buffalo Sabres, which had the best odds at winning the Draft, will pick second, and the Arizona Coyotes will pick third.

Penguins Trade for Winger David Perron

iStockPhoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired winger David Perron from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Robert Klinkhammer and a 2015 first-round pick Friday.

The 26-year-old Perron moves from one of the worst teams in the league in Edmonton to one of the best in Pittsburgh.

“Having this kind of opportunity is pretty surreal," Perron told the team's official website. "We all know the type of players this team has. I’m going to come in, work as hard as I can and try to fit in anyway that I can.”

Perron's contract expires after next season, and has a salary-cap hit of $3.812 million.

The 6-foot, 200 pound Perron is coming off a season where he scored a career-high 28 goals for Edmonton. He has 19 points in 38 games this season.
