Florida Ends 2014 Season on High Note, Top ECU in the Birmingham Bowl

iStockPhoto/Thinkstock(BIRMINGHAM, Ala.) -- After a disappointing regular season, the Florida Gators have some momentum heading into 2015 after defeating East Carolina 28-20 in the Birmingham Bowl on Saturday.

Gators quarterback Treon Harris didn't have his best game of the season, but he was good enough as he completed five of 11 passes for 123 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

With the Pirates closing in, Harris threw an 86-yard touchdown to Ahmad Fulwood to give Florida a 28-14 lead.

But arguably the story of the game was when Harris left the game in the third quarter with a leg injury. In came junior quarterback and former starter Jeff Driskel.

On Saturday, new Gators head coach Jim McElwain confirmed that Driskel has asked for and received his release from his scholarship.

"That's up to him," McElwain said on Driskel's possible return. "We all have choices, and I'm not going to hold him hostage."

Driskel went eight of 17 for 48 yards in what was likely his final game with the team.

Florida's Athletic Director to Continue to Evaluate Will Muschamp

Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- In the midst of what is proving to be another disappointing season, Florida Gators' athletic Director Jeremy Foley has stated that he will continue to evaluate head coach Will Muschamp "as it plays out" over the season.

Through the first six weeks of the season, the Gators find themselves at 3-3 and 5th in the SEC East standings behind South Carolina, Kentucky, Missouri, and Georgia.

"At the beginning of the season, we said we would evaluate the season as it plays out," Foley said in a statement. "We will continue to do so. Our sole focus right now is supporting our coaching staff and players as they prepare for Georgia."

The fan criticism towards Mushamp has grown week by week as he is now in his fourth season as the team's head coach and has had little success.

In Muschamp's second season with Florida back in 2012, he went 11-2 that year, but is a combined 14-17 in his other three seasons at the helm.

Florida's DeVon Walker Out for Season with Knee Injury

Mitchell Layton/Getty Images(GAINESVILLE, Fla.) --  Florida guard DeVon Walker is expected to miss all of next season with a knee injury.

The Junior tore his right ACL last Friday.

Walker played in 35 games for the Gators last season, averaging 2.4 points and 1.2 rebounds in just over 12 minutes per game.

Despite coming off the bench and playing limited minutes, Walker was fourth on the team in blocked shots, with 13, and in three-pointers made, with 19.

Walker's role was expected to increase this next year with fellow guard Scottie Wilbekin having graduated.

With Walker sidelined, former Rutgers guard Eli Carter and freshmen Chris Chiozza and Brandone Francis all could see more playing time for the Gators in 2014-15.

(1) Florida Advances to Sweet 16 after Defeating (9) Pittsburgh, 61-45

Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images(ORLANDO, Fla.) -- The Florida Gators took care of business on Saturday after taking down Pittsburgh 61-45.

Scottie Wilbekin was the hero for the Gators against the Panthers. He scored 21 points in the game, including 11 in the team's 13 in a 7-minute stretch in the second half. Michael Frazier was the only other Florida player to score in double figures as he chipped in ten points.

With the win, Florida won their 28th consecutive game, and advance to the Sweet 16 for the fourth consecutive year.

"We just wanted to come out and not let them player harder than us or not play as hard as we can," Wilbeken said after the game. "I think we do a good job in having our energy up at the start of the game, and we played together on offense and played together on defense."

Florida's next opponent has yet to be determined. On Thursday they will play the winner of Sunday's UCLA - Steven F. Austin matchup.
