Angels' Richards Won't Be Ready For Season Opener

Rob Carr/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Garrett Richards will not be ready to pitch Opening Day for the team according to manager, Mike Scioscia.

Richards is expected to begin pitcher fielding drills in a week as he continues to make progress from August knee surgery.  The Angels remain hopeful he could be pitching in games two or three weeks into the season.

"It's not going to be Opening Day, let's put it that way," Scioscia said Sunday. "He knows it, and it's great that he's not going to be able to rush it because our medical staff's not going to let him. There's a progression. He has to pass every plateau. It's great that he's going to shoot for being ready. He's working very hard to be ready Opening Day, but he's not going to be ready Opening Day."

Before the injury, Richards was 13-4 with a 2.61 ERA in 28 starts for the team.

Report: SP Garrett Richards Agrees to One-Year Contract with Angels

Rob Carr/Getty Images(NEW YORK) --  The Los Angeles Angels agreed to a one-year, $3.2 million deal with starting pitcher Garrett Richards on Saturday, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.

The Angels avoid salary arbitration with the 26-year-old Richards by coming to a compromise. Richards asked for $3.8 million while the Angels offered $2.4 million before settling on a deal.

Richards was having a career season last year before tearing his patellar tendon in his left knee, ending his season at the end of August. Richards had surgery on the knee and is expected to be ready for opening day.

Richards was in the race for the American League Cy Young award last season, before the injury. He pitched 168 2/3 innings, compiling a 13-4 record, 2.61 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 164 strikeouts.

Angels Pitcher Garrett Richards Leaves Game with Knee Injury

Rob Carr/Getty Images(BOSTON) -- Los Angeles Angels pitcher Garrett Richards was taken off the field on a stretcher after suffering what the team says is a left knee/patellar injury.

Richards was injured in the second inning of the team's 8-3 win over the Boston Red Sox Wednesday night when he slipped and fell while running to cover first base.

"Winning the game, obviously, it's always important, but it's secondary to what happened," Angels skipper Mike Scioscia said. "This is a tough night for us. We'll just see where Garrett is. Obviously, it's a significant injury."

Richards would be a serious loss for the AL West leading Angels: he leads the team in ERA, wins, strikeouts and WHIP.

Angels Win Seventh Straight, Beat Rangers

Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images(ARLINGTON, Texas) -- Mike Trout's 22nd home run of the year proved to be more than enough on Friday as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim beat Texas 3-0. It was the seventh straight win for the Angles (55-37) who have also won eight of their last nine.

Garrett Richards was masterful on the hill, scattering five hits in his seven innings of work for Los Angeles. The righty is now unbeaten in his last eight starts, winning seven in a row, with a 1.27 earned run average. Richards (11-2) has not lost since a May 30 defeat at Oakland.

Trout's homer was the first hit of the night for the Angels as Nick Tepesch had retired the first 10 batters he faced for the Rangers (38-55). Tepesch (3-5) then gave up two more runs in the top of the seventh inning before ultimately being pulled in favor of Neftali Feliz. Texas has lost 12 of its last 13 and currently sits with the worst record in the bigs.

Adrian Beltre did extend his hitting streak to 15 games for Texas but the team was 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
