Roger Federer Moves Ahead in French Open

KENZO TRIBOUILLARD/AFP/GettyImages(PARIS) -- After Serena Williams was eliminated yesterday on the women's side of the French Open, Wednesday morning got off to a shaky start for the men's side.

The third seeded Roger Federer dropped his first set with 92nd ranked Adrian Ungur of Romania, but then rebounded to go on to a 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-3 win.  With the victory, Federer also broke Jimmy Connors record for most career wins at major tournaments in the Open era, which began in 1968.

"I didn't think it before the match, during the match, I was just happy to get through at the end," said Federer who now has his 234th Grand Slam victory under his belt. "Obviously, one of the great records I think.  I'm proud to have it I guess."

Federer's last French Open trophy at Roland Garros came in 2009.  Moving on also on Wednesday was the No.1 seeded Novak Djokovic, who won in straight sets.

Roger Federer Ties Open Era Record

Kenzo Tribouillard/AFP(PARIS) -- Roger Federer defeated Tobias Kamke of Germany in the first round of the French Open Monday, 6-2, 7-5, 6-3. It’s Federer’s 233rd Grand Slam victory, tying him with Jimmy Connors for the Open era record.

“That’s a big one, because that was longevity,” Federer said. “Jimmy is obviously one of the greats of all time and was around for 20 years.”

Federer is 233-35 in tennis’ four Grand Slam tournaments. He has won a record 16 titles.
