Josh Freeman Signs One-Year Deal With Dolphins

Marc Serota/Getty Images

(MIAMI, Fl.) -- The Miami Dolphins have signed quarterback Josh Freeman to a one-year deal.

Freeman spent all of the 2014 season out of football, a decision he felt was best because, "personally, during the year, I felt it was better to let things cool down because it was a pretty rocky year the previous year."

After being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers midway through the 2013 season, Freeman signed with the Minnesota Vikings, started one game and was let go in the offseason. He signed with the New York Giants, but was released again before the 2014 season.

“I feel like they have a really strong direction in their organization from a leadership standpoint,” Freeman said in an interview via the team website at the Doctors Hospital Training Facility at Nova Southeastern University. “I’m familiar with Dennis Hickey and a number of staff members. (I was) in there with (quarterbacks coach) Zac Taylor and Coach (Bill) Lazor. We were in there talking about the offense and the direction. Also the conversations I had with Coach (Joe) Philbin were pretty awesome. I think it will be a great fit.”

Freeman was drafted in 2009 by the Buccaneers where Hickey, the Dolphins' general manager, served as Director of College Scouting for Tampa Bay.

Giants Release Quarterback Josh Freeman

Marc Serota/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The Josh Freeman era is already over in New York as the Giants have cut the quarterback just six weeks after signing him as a backup to starter Eli Manning.

With Manning back practicing at OTA's the team now has three healthy quarterbacks in he, Curtis Painter, and Ryan Nassib.

Not too long ago, Freeman was considered one of the up-and-coming stars in the NFL after he was selected in the first-round of the 2009 Draft out of Kansas State by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Last season, he feuded with head coach Greg Schiano before he was ultimately released mid-season. He wound up signing with the Minnesota Vikings, but started just one game for the team, which happen to come against the Giants.

Freeman's lack of ability to learn the Vikings offense did him in with Minnesota, and reportedly, Freeman had trouble picking up the Giants offense as well.

Still just 26-years-old, Freeman has thrown 80 touchdowns during his career, but has also thrown 67 interceptions.

Christian Ponder To Start Sunday For Vikings

Tom Dahlin/ Getty Images(EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn.) --  The Minnesota Vikings will start Christian Ponder at quarterback for Sunday night's game against the Green Bay Packers, the team announced Friday.

Josh Freeman started last week's game against the New York Giants, but he suffered a concussion in the loss and is forced to sit out this week.

"I think it's true to say that I was frustrated and down, but I didn't let that affect me," Ponder said. "I know this is an opportunity to step back and improve on some things and I did. It's got to translate out to the field, though. I'm excited."

The Vikings drafted Ponder in the first round of the 2011 draft.  He took over as the starting quarterback seven games into his rookie season and held the job until suffering a fractured rib on Sept 22. of this year against the Cleveland Browns.  He passed for 691 yards with two touchdowns and five interceptions before the injury.

Matt Cassel will serve as Ponder's backup while Freeman recovers.

Josh Freeman Has Concussion-Like Symptoms

Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images(EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn.) -- Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier announced on Wednesday that quarterback Josh Freeman has concussion-like symptoms.

Frazier said that he believes the injury happened during the third quarter of the Giants game on Monday, but Freeman did not say anything about it.

Freeman's status is questionable for their game against the Packers on Sunday night.

"We have to move forward as if he is not playing on Sunday night," Frazier said on Wednesday.

The Vikings will send Christian Ponder out against Green Bay if Freeman is unable to suit up.

Freeman was 20 of 53 and overthrew 16 attempts Monday night, which is the most by any quarterback since the start of the 2006 season.

Rob Tringali/SportsChrome/Getty Images(EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J) --  The New York Giants are victorious at last.

Vikings QB Josh Freeman to Start Against Giants

Marc Serota/Getty Images(EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn.) --  Minnesota Vikings quarterback Josh Freeman will start Monday night's game against the New York Giants, the team announced Wednesday.

"Our anticipation is he will play well," head coach Leslie Frazier said.

Freeman signed with the Vikings last week after he was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team had originally planned to let Freeman sit another week in order to become more comfortable with the offense, but the team sped up the timetable after watching him excel in practice all week.

Freeman is familiar with the Vikings' offense thanks to his days at Kansas State University. He played for Ron Price while in college, who who worked with Vikings offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave when the two were at Virginia together.

"I took out my old books, and started going through, looking at some of the different principle concepts in the offense, the run game," Freeman said. "There's a lot of carryover to different concepts. We've just been grinding. Some stuff sticks faster than others, but it's been good."

In three starts for the Buccaneers this year, Freeman threw for 571 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions while completing just 45.7 percent of his passes.

Christian Ponder will be Freeman's primary backup.

Vikings Sign Quarterback Josh Freeman

Marc Serota/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The Josh Freeman free agent tour is over as the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback has decided to sign with the Minnesota Vikings.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported that Freeman signed a one-year deal worth $3 million with the team.

With an injury to starting quarterback Christian Ponder, the team will see if Freeman can come in and inject new life into the team.

Ponder is recovering from a fractured rib, but was ineffective when he was on the field. He was completing 59.0% of his passes and had thrown five interceptions to just two touchdowns.

For Freeman, he finds a new team after a messy divorce from the team that made him the 17th overall pick in the 2009 draft. He and head coach Greg Schiano clashed, and the relationship was unable to be salvaged.

The 25-year-old Freeman started three games this season and completed just 45.7% of his passes and threw two touchdowns compared to just three interceptions.

Buccaneers Release Quarterback Josh Freeman

Marc Serota/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The Josh Freeman era is over in Tampa Bay as the Buccaneers have released the embattled quarterback.

After benching him earlier in the season and unable to find a trade partner, the team decided to move on from the player they selcted 17th overall in the 2009 draft.

Freeman was in the final year of his deal, and reportedly never saw eye-to-eye with head coach Greg Schiano.

"We made the decision today to release Josh Freeman. We appreciate his efforts over the past five seasons, but we felt that this was the best interests of both Josh and the Buccaneers," Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said in a statement.

It was just a few years ago taht Freeman was considered among the best young quarterbacks in the NFL.

In 2010, he threw 25 touchdowns compared to just six interceptions. But in recent seasons, his touchdowns have gone down while his interceptions have gone up.

He was recently benched in favor of rookie quarterback Mike Glennon.

ESPN: Buccaneers Bench QB Josh Freeman for Mike Glennon

Marc Serota/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The Josh Freeman era appears to be over in Tampa Bay. According to ESPN, Tampa Bay has decided to bench Freeman in favor of rookie quarterback Mike Glennon.

"This league is about finding a franchise quarterback, and with Josh's roller-coaster career, we don't feel he's that guy," a team source told ESPN.

The team is apparently making the decision now to give Glennon adequate time to learn and develop. After their game on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, they enter their bye week. Head coach Greg Schiano didn't want Glennon to anticipate his first start for two weeks and overprepare.

After a promising start to his career, Freeman has regressed over the past few years. In three games this season, Freeman is completing just 45.7% of his passes and has a 59.3 quarterback rating. He's thrown 42 interceptions in his last 34 games.

Meanwhile, Glennon was the team's third-round pick in the 2013 draft. He was the third quarterback taken in the draft, and will also be the third rookie quarterback to start this season.

Patriots Improve to 3-0 After Defeating the Buccaneers, 23-3

Jim Rogash/Getty Images(FOXBOROUGH, Mass.) -- Things are starting to click for Tom Brady and the rest of the New England Patriots offense. The Pats improved to 3-0 on the season after beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-3 on Sunday.

The Patriots receivers had been receiving some heat lately for their lack of production early in the season, but they silenced critics on Sunday.

Rookie Kenbrell Thompkins caught two touchdown passes, while fellow rookie Aaron Dobson lead the team in receiving as he caught seven passes for 52 yards.

Brady managed to throw for 225 yards with two touchdowns with one interception.

One of the surprise developments on the day was that LeGarrette Blount, not Stevan Ridley, led the team in rushing. Blount had 65 rushing yards on 14 carries.

For the Buccaneers, quarterback Josh Freeman struggled to get anything going. He completed just 19 of 41 passes for 236 yards with an interception.

Running back Doug Martin had 88 rushing yards on 20 carries.

With the loss, Tampa Bay now sits at 0-3 to start the season.
