Knicks Agree to Deal with Veteran Big Man Kenyon Martin

Ronald Martinez/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The New York Knicks have agreed to terms on a 10-day contract with veteran big man Kenyon Martin, Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald announced Thursday.

The ability to negotiate with Martin was created when the Knicks opened up a roster spot by trading Ronnie Brewer to the Oklahoma City Thunder Thursday, for a second-round pick.

The team must wait for Brewer to pass a physical before a deal can be finalized, and the Knicks are hopeful to sign Martin in the next couple of days.

New York currently has a big man problem. Rasheed Wallace has been out since mid-December with a left foot injury and Marcus Camby has a plantar fascia injury in his left foot that has kept him out since mid-January. The 35-year-old Martin is expected to provide the Knicks with insurance if the other two don't come back.

Martin played 42 games for the Los Angeles Clippers last season averaging 5.2 points and 4.3 rebounds a game. Martin hasn't played this season, but is said to be in shape. If everything works out Grunwald hopes to sign Martin for the rest of the season.

“We watched a lot of the tape of his season last year with the Clippers and he played very well,"   We know he was working out prior to coming to New York this weekend and we’re hopeful that he is going to show he’s got what it takes to be an NBA player.  I’m optimistic that he is going to be able to come in and play for us.”

Clippers Eliminate Memphis, 82-72

Los Angeles Clippers/NBA(MEMPHIS, Tenn.) -- The Los Angeles Clippers are moving onto a date with the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night in the second round of the NBA playoffs.

Los Angeles got 41 points off the bench in their 82-72 victory over Memphis, to send them packing.  Chris Paul led the way with 19 points for the Clippers and a banged up Blake Griffin did all he could with eight of his own.

But it was Kenyon Martin who provided seven of his 11 points in the fourth quarter along with big defensive stops that was the key to a Game 7 victory.

"That's why it's seven games," Martin said. "If you don't do it before, you get another chance. So they did what they had to do, they came and stole home court back on our floor. ... We had a chance to close it out. We knew we let it go, an opportunity get away."

The win gave the Clippers their third postseason series win in 41 years and their second since relocating to Los Angeles.

"I want the guys to enjoy this, and then we'll regroup tomorrow and focus in on that," Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said. "But obviously another big challenge for us."
