Eagles Sign Safety O.J. Atogwe

NFL via Getty Images(PHILADELPHIA) -- In 2011, the Philadelphia Eagles' defense failed to live up to expectations, so the team is taking every precaution they can to avoid that same issue in 2012. The team has come to an agreement on a one-year contract with veteran safety O.J. Atogwe.

The soon-to-be 31-year old Atogwe spent last season with the Washington Redskins. In his one season in Washington, Atogwe recorded 60 tackles and three interceptions. Before playing for the Redskins, he spent six seasons with the St. Louis Rams.

"O.J. will bring us veteran, quality depth at the safety position," Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said. "We feel good about the young safeties we have on our roster, but our goal is to have the most competition possible at all of our positions as we head into training camp."

Atogwe becomes the only true veteran the Eagles have at the safety position. Nate Allen and Kurt Coleman are both entering their third season in the NFL, while Jaiquawn Jarrett will be coming into just his second season in the NFL.

Eagles' Asomugha Carted Off Field During Practice with Knee Injury

Chris Trotman/Getty Images(PHILADELPHIA) -- Just when it looked like things could be looking up for the Philadelphia Eagles, they saw one of their star players go down with an injury heading into a critical game. Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was carted off the practice field after suffering an injury to his left knee during practice Thursday.

"It's painful to see," Eagles safety Kurt Coleman told csnphilly.com. "You never want to see a teammate go down, especially when it's your lower body. But hopefully he'll be back soon."

While the injury is not believed to be as serious as some previously thought, Asomugha's status for the Eagles' game Sunday against the New England Patriots is unknown as of now.

The 30-year old Asomugha was the prized free agent signing by the team in the offseason. He signed a five-year, $60 million contract during the summer.
