Report: Raiders Will Cut LB Woodley

Al Bello/Getty Images(OAKLAND) -- The Oakland Raiders made a gamble last year that LaMarr Woodley would bring a strong veteran presence to the middle of their defense.

It went bust. The Raiders are expected to cut Woodley this week, according to CSN Bay Area.

Woodley, 30, signed a two-year $12 million dollar contract with the Raiders after spending the first seven seasons of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

However, Woodley missed 10 games last season due to a biceps injury. Even when he did play, he failed to make an impact as he recorded five tackles for the 3-13 Raiders.

Oakland will likely have the second most cap space heading into free agency with over $60 million available. In addition, to comply with the CBA rules for minimum cash spending, the Raiders must spend at least $20 million dollars this season towards their salary cap.

Woodley: Raiders Are Still a Playoff Contender

Al Bello/Getty Images(ALAMEDA) -- Oakland Raiders defensive end LaMarr Woodley still believes that this current roster is a playoff team in 2014.

The Raiders reported to OTAs on Tuesday and Woodley backed up his comments from March about the team being a playoff contender.

"People definitely reacted when I said this was a playoff-caliber team," Woodley said. "That should always be the main objective. If your goal is to go 8-8, I don’t want you on my team. We’re aiming for the top. Anything less is unacceptable."

Woodley believes that the team has a lot of potential, with new veterans brought in that include quarterback Matt Schaub.

"After going back and looking at Raiders games from last year, they were in a lot of close games and couldn’t seal the deal," Woodley said. "During the offseason, they brought in guys who know how to win. You need that attitude to get to the next level."

Woodley spent his first seven seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers before coming to Oakland this offseason.

LB LaMarr Woodley Signs with Raiders

Al Bello/Getty Images(ALAMEDA, Calif.) -- Linebacker LaMarr Woodley signed a two-year deal with the Oakland Raiders on Thursday.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reports the deal is worth a maximum of $12 million.

The 6-foot-2, 266 pound Woodley has spent his entire seven season NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Woodley, a former Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion, has 57 career sacks and was the Steelers' highest paid defensive player of all-time before being cut earlier in the week.

Woodley now joins a team that hasn't has a winning season in 11 years, but he seems optimistic that can change.

"With a few pieces added to this team, this team can be a good team," Woodley said." When I played in Pittsburgh last year, we came out here to Oakland and we lost. So, I feel like Oakland has a good team. The past few years with the salary cap and the different things going on, Oakland wasn’t in the situation, really, to go out and get free agents like they can get now, or even in the draft they weren’t able to go out and draft a bunch of new guys because of the situation it was in. But, I think now coming this year, those situations have changed.”

LB LaMarr Woodley Done for Season

Pittsburgh Steelers/NFL(PITTSBURGH) -- Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley was placed on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday because of an injured right calf.

Woodley, who missed three games earlier this season with a left calf injury, strained his right calf in the first quarter of the Steelers' win over the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday night.

Woodley has now missed 12 games due to various leg injuries since signing a six-year, $61.5 million contract with the team in 2011.

"He's been solid, not only this season but over the course of his career," Tomlin said Tuesday at his weekly news conference. "But obviously, particularly in recent years, he's had to battle some injuries, unfortunately for him and for us."

The 29-year-old Woodley has 36 tackles, five sacks and one forced fumble this season.

The Steelers signed linebacker Jamaal Westerman, who was cut by the Buffalo Bills on Dec. 10, to take Woodley's place.
