Kenley Jansen Activated From DL

Doug Pensinger/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers activated closer Kenley Jansen from the 15-day disabled list Friday.

Jansen has been out the entire season after having surgery to remove a growth from his foot.

The 27-year-old Jansen had a career-high 44 saves last season and returns to a Dodgers' bullpen that has blown wins in two of its last three games.

Before returning to the Dodgers, Jansen pitched six rehab games with Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga. During that time he threw 5 1/3 innings, striking out eight while only walking one batter.

Dodgers skipper Don Mattingly said he doesn't want to throw Jansen into the closer role right away but also added he could use the flame-thrower if a three-run save situation occurred.

Despite the skipper's convictions, Jansen seems ready to take his role as the team's closer back.

"I just need to pitch one inning," Jansen said. "That will tell me if I'm ready for it, just to feel comfortable again, to feel that I can do that job."

To make room for Jansen, the Dodgers optioned left-hander Daniel Coulombe to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Dodgers Being Cautious with Puig

Ron Vesely/MLB Photos via Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig's rehab assignment has been put on hold, the team announced on Tuesday.

Puig has been out since April 24 after experiencing tightness in his left hamstring. He pulled up while running to first base during a game in Class A Rancho Cucamonga Friday night.

Following an MRI on Monday that showed a strain that has been plaguing Puig, the team felt it was best to be cautious with him.

"I don't know about all the way over, but obviously it wasn't necessarily good news," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said when asked if this was a setback in Puig's rehab. "But I don't really think it's starting all the way over."

"I guess in a sense," Mattingly continued. "You know, they're always doing something, so you're never really shut down. I'm sure they'll let it calm down a couple of days and then kind of get back on the program, as far as building toward doing bike, doing water, doing bases."

Puig was eligible to return on Sunday before his latest setback.  He was batting .279 with two home runs prior to the injury.

Kirk Gibson Diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Former Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers star Kirk Gibson has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

The 57-year-old Gibson, who spent the last five seasons as the skipper of the Arizona Diamondbacks, recently joined Fox Sports Detroit as an analyst. Gibson appeared on the April 6 Opening Day telecast but had not been seen since.

"I have faced many different obstacles in my life, and have always maintained a strong belief that no matter the circumstances, I could overcome those obstacles,"  Gibson said in a statement released by Fox Sports Detroit. "While this diagnosis poses a new kind of challenge for me, I intend to stay true to my beliefs. With the support of my family and friends, I will meet this challenge with the same determination and unwavering intensity that I have displayed in all of my endeavors in life. I look forward to being back at the ballpark as soon as possible."

As a player, Gibson won World Series championships with the Tigers (1984) and Dodgers (1988). Over his 17 big league seasons, Gibson hit .268 with 255 home runs, 870 RBIs, and a .352 on-base percentage while winning the 1988 National League MVP.

Parkinson's disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that impacts movement. Some high profile names that live with the disease include actor Michael J. Fox and Muhammad Ali.

Dodgers put Yasiel Puig on DL with Hamstring Injury

Ron Vesely/MLB Photos via Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers put Yasiel Puig on the 15-day disabled list due to a tight left hamstring before Sunday's game at Petco Park, marking the first time the outfielder has been on the DL in his career.

Puig aggravated the injury trying to beat out a groundball to third base Friday night. He first injured his hamstring April 13 and had been in and out of the lineup since then. Puig tried testing the injury by running on the field and hitting in the indoor batting cage.

"I think he's disappointed, because he thinks he's going to be ready to play in four or five days," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "That's the tough part. Being ready to play and being 100 percent are different. Yasiel plays at one speed. I think we see that. There's no real putting the governor on him. He's just going to play at that speed. It's tough for him to say, 'Hey, you've got to back off.' That's where you've got to protect him from himself."

Puig was batting .279 with two home runs on the young season.
