Mike Aviles Grand Slam Gives Indians 4-0 Win Over the Tigers

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(DETROIT) -- The Cleveland Indians will not go down without a fight. Still fighting for a playoff spot, the team beat the Detroit Tigers 4-0 on Sunday thanks to a grand slam from Mike Aviles.

Both teams got excellent performances from their starting pitching. Tigers' ace Justin Verlander rebounded from his recent struggles for at least one day. He pitched 7.0 innings while surrendering no runs with two strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Danny Salazar was effective in 6.0 innings of work as he didn't allow an earned run, and struck out five Tigers in the process.

The Indians managed just five hits in the game, but it only took one to change the course of the game.

Tigers' closer Joaquin Benoit entered the game in the ninth inning and proceeded to walk three Indians before third baseman Mike Aviles stepped up to the plate. With one swing of the bat, Aviles hit a grand slam and sealed a 4-0 win after closer Chris Perez finished the job in the ninth inning.

With the win, the Indians now trail the Tampa Bay Rays by four games in the Wild Card standings.

Asdrubal Cabrera Placed on DL with Quad Strain

Rich Pilling/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The Cleveland Indians placed shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, due to a strained right quadriceps.

Cabrera has been dealing with the injury since the end of April and underwent an MRI in Cleveland Tuesday that confirmed the injury.

Indians skipper Terry Francona said he didn't know how long it would take for Cabrera to come back but also added that the Indians' medical staff said similar injuries have taken players 3-4 weeks to recover.

Cabrera is hitting .254 with five home runs and 25 RBIs this season. With Cabrera out Francona says Mike Aviles will get the majority of playing time at shortstop.

The Indians also called up shortstop Juan Diaz from Triple-A Columbus to take Cabrera's roster spot.
