Trout's Agent Not Happy With New Angels Deal

Jason Wise/MLB Photos via Getty Images(TEMPE, Ariz.) -- The Los Angeles Angels gave AL Rookie of the Year Mike Trout a contract worth $510,000 on Saturday, which represents a $20,000 increase above the major league minimum. The new deal drew a negative reaction from Trout’s agent, Craig Landis.

“During the process, on behalf of Mike, I asked only that the Angels compensate Mike fairly for his historic 2012 season, given his service time,” Landis said in a statement. “In my opinion, this contract falls well short of a ‘fair’ contract and I have voiced this to the Angels throughout the process. Nonetheless, the renewal of Mike’s contract will put an end of this discussion.”

The 21-year-old Trout has one year, 70 days of major league service and most likely will attain arbitration status following the 2014 season. If he doesn’t sign a long term deal with the Halos, he is expected to become a free agent following the 2017 World Series.

In his first big league season last year, Trout batted .326 with 30 home runs, 83 RBIs, 129 runs and 49 stolen bases.

Angels' Mike Trout Adds Extra 10-15 Pounds

Jamie Squire/Getty Images(TEMPE, Ariz.) -- Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout was the 2012 American League Rookie of the Year and runner-up to Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera in the MVP race, but coming into spring training Trout has put on 10 to 15 pounds.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia fielded questions on Tuesday on if his All-Star should give a call to Jenny Craig.

"He's 21 now, so the weight is not a concern,'' Scioscia said of Trout who now weighs 241 pounds coming into Arizona. ”You don't know how much a body is going to fill out. He's running great. He feels great. He's not too far from where he played last year. Everything he has is muscle. His body [composition] is still terrific, from what the trainers tell me."

"If a player is 28 and he comes in a little heavier, it's probably more of a concern. These young kids in our lineup are still growing -- particularly the kids from Latin America. They'll start to fill out quicker because of diets and strength and conditioning,'' Scioscia added.

Trout addressed the issue on Feb. 14 and said he'll lose about 5 to -10 pounds by the time Opening Day rolls around on April 1.

"I know where I need to be to start the year,'' Trout said.

Trout, Harper Win Rookies Of The Year

Jason Wise/MLB Photos via Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout was unanimously named the 2012 American League Rookie of the Year on Monday, while Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper took home that honor for the National League.

The 21-year-old Trout batted .326 with 30 home runs and 83 RBIs. He also scored 129 runs and had 49 stolen bases in 139 games.

Trout is the eighth player in history to win the award unanimously and the first since Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria won it in 2008.

For his part, Bryce Harper finished the 2012 campaign with a .270 average along with 22 homers and 59 RBIs. He also scored 98 runs in 139 games.

The Battle for A.L. MVP

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- L.A. Angels outfielder Mike Trout, 21, is in the running for the Rookie of the Year award and the A.L. Most Valuable Player award, too.  Trout is hitting .327 with 27 home runs and 77 RBIs, and has a league-leading 46 stolen bases headed into Thursday's game against the Texas Rangers.

With just about two weeks remaining in the regular season, Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera currently leads the league in average (.333) and RBIs (130) and is one homer behind Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton with 41.

Trout appeared on ESPN radio on Thursday and spoke about the possibility of winning both the Rookie of the Year award and MVP.

"As a kid growing up, you want to be the best player in each of the league that you're in," said Trout.  "It'd be an incredible feeling, it would mean a lot to me."

"I'm just out there having fun and doing everything I can to help the team win, not worrying about anything else."

Even with Trout's performance so far, Cabrera's numbers don't lie, and the last time baseball saw a Triple Crown winner was in 1967 when Carl Yastrzemski did it for the Boston Red Sox.

Jim Leyland Backs Miguel Cabrera for AL MVP

Jared Wickerham/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- For much of the season, Los Angeles Angels rookie phenom Mike Trout has been touted by many as the American League MVP. If you ask Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland though, his third baseman, Miguel Cabrera should take home the award.

"In my opinion, Miggy is the MVP," Leyland told WXYT 97.1 Radio In Detroit. "Although you have time to play yet -- there is time left in the season -- but it the voting were today, Miguel Cabrera is the MVP."

Leyland might sounded a bit biased, but its hard to argue that Cabrera is having an MVP caliber season. Heading into Friday night's games, among American League players, Cabrera ranks second in batting average, fourth in home runs, first in runs batted in, fourth in runs, and third in slugging.

Meanwhile, the recently turned 21-year old Trout is having a rookie seson for the ages. Even though he's only played in 89 games so far, among American League players Trout ranks first in batting average, first in runs scored, first in stolen bases, and second in slugging percentage.

The Angels have had offensive struggles in their outfield and  manager Mike Scioscia says Trout will play.

Bobby Abreu: Play Me or Trade Me

Mike Stobe/Getty Images(TEMPE, Ariz.) -- Even though the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim added first baseman Albert Pujols and starting pitcher C.J. Wilson to an already strong roster, outfielder/designated hitter Bobby Abreu wants to play fulltime or not be a part of the Angels organization anymore.

Last season, Abreu started in 142 games, hitting .253 with eight homers, 60 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases. He still feels that even after 16 major league seasons, he should be still be getting significant playing time. If that doesn't happen on the Angels, the he wants to be traded.

"If the Angels don't have a position for me, then the best thing is to trade me," Abreu told ESPNdeportesLosAngeles.com. "It would be the correct (thing) to do. I won't be able to do nothing sitting on the bench."

As of right now, the Angels already have a crowded outfield with Vernon Wells, Torii Hunter, and Peter Bourjos. Also in the Angels' corner is Mike Trout, who is considered the best minor league positional player and who made his major league debut last season.
