Gattis Powers Atlanta Past Minnesota, 8-3

Tony Firriolo/MLB Photos via Getty Images(ATLANTA) -- Less than 24 hours after hitting a pinch-hit, two-out homer in the bottom of the ninth, Braves catcher Evan Gattis belted a grand slam on Wednesday in Atlanta’s 8-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

With Atlanta leading 4-0 in the fourth inning, the 26-year-old Gattis took a 3-0 pitch from Twins starter Vance Worley (1-5) and sent it just inside the right-field foul pole. He now has 10 home runs in 121 at-bats.

Braves starter Paul Maholm (6-4) allowed seven hits and no earned runs in 7 1-3 innings of work.

With the win, Atlanta improves to 28-18 while Minnesota falls to 18-25 on the season.

Report: Pitcher Carl Pavano Ruptures Spleen

Jim McIsaac/Getty Images(NEW YORK) --  Free agent pitcher Carl Pavano suffered a ruptured spleen while shoveling snow in his driveway at his home in Vermont, according to a report by FoxSports.com.

The injury will sideline Pavano for six to eight weeks.  He was with the Minnesota Twins since the middle of the 2009 season, but last season he was unable to pitch after June 1 because of a right shoulder injury.

Pavano went just 2-5 with a 6.00 ERA for the Twins last season.

Before the injury, it was believed that the New York Mets and Colorado Rockies were showing interest in the 37-year-old Pavano.

Pavano has compiled a 108-107 record in 13 MLB seasons.

Twins Sign Pitcher Rich Harden to Minor League Deal

Chris Trotman/Getty Images(MINNEAPOLIS) -- The Minnesota Twins are doing whatever they can to add depth to their starting rotation. The team has signed starting pitcher Rich Harden to a minor league contract.

The 31-year old Harden sat out the 2012 season after recovering from rotator cuff surgery. Harden's career has been derailed by injuries, but he will get a chance to compete for a spot in the Twins' starting rotation in 2013.

Harden's talent has never been in question, but his durability has been. He hasn't pitched over 150 innings in a season since 2004. He has a career 3.76 ERA, but has only averaged 18 starts per season.

Since making his Major League debut in 2003, only Tim Lincecum and Clayton Kershaw have a better strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio. The Twins are hoping he can reach back to the fountain of youth and stay healthy.

The Twins so far this offseason have acquired Harden along with fellow pitchers Vane Worley, Kevin Correia, and Mike Pelfrey. Minnesota had the second-worst ERA among American League teams last season.

In six full MLB seasons Liriano posts a 53-54 record with a 4.40 ERA.

Liriano will join a Pittsburgh rotation that features a resurgent A.J. Burnett along with Wandy Rodriguez and James McDonald.

The Pirates are coming off of 20 straight losing seasons, finishing 79-83 this past year.

Phillies Trade for Ben Revere

Eliot J. Schechter/MLB Photos via Getty Images(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) -- The Philadelphia Phillies and Minnesota Twins completed a trade Thursday that sends outfielder Ben Revere to the Phillies in exchange for pitchers Vance Worley and Trevor May.

The 24-year-old Revere hit .294 and stole 40 bases for the Twins last season.

"Heading to an good organization w/ the phillies can't wait to get started w/ them..!! God bless..!!," Revere tweeted.

Revere comes at a good price. He is set to be with the Phillies for the next five years and will make close to the league minimum for the first two.

As for the Twins, they receive a pitcher in Worley who as a rookie in 2011 went 11-3 with a 3.01 ERA. He didn't fare as well in 2012 going 6-9 with a 4.20 ERA before being sent to the disabled list in late August to have right elbow surgery.

The Twins also receive Trevor May, who was considered the Phillies top pitching prospect going into last season. May finished the season with a 10-13 with a 4.87 ERA at Double-A Reading.
