Blackhawks Edge Predators, 4-3 to Win First Round of NHL Playoffs

iStockPhoto/Thinkstock(CHICAGO) -- The Blackhawks are moving on in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith scored the winning goal late in the third period as Chicago defeated the Nashville Predators on Saturday Night, 4-3 to win their first-round series in six games.

Nashville jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening period with a pair of goals from forward James Neal. They would increase their lead to 3-1, 11:16 into the first period on center Matt Cullen’s goal.

Chicago would roar back with goals from center Jonathan Toews and forward Patrick Kane to even the score at 3-3 entering the second period.

Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne stopped 28-of-32 goals attempted while Corey Crawford and Scott Darling were a combined 22-of-25 for Chicago.

Predators Rule Out D Weber for Remainder of Series

John Russell/NHLI via Getty Images(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) -- Nashville Predators announced Friday that defenseman Shea Weber will miss the remainder of the team's first-round playoff series with the Chicago Blackhawks due to a lower-body injury.

Weber has not played since Game 2 of the series when he endured the injury. There was speculation that Weber tore his ACL, but the Predators announced that this isn't true.

Weber played in 78 games for the Predators this season, averaging 26:22 of ice time per game while compiling 15 goals and 30 assists.

Game 6 of the Predators' series with the Blackhawks is Saturday night in Chicago. The Hawks lead the best-of-seven series 3-2.

Predators Acquire Defenseman Cody Franson from the Maple Leafs

iStockPhoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- The top team in the NHL has added even more reinforcements as they've acquired defenseman Cody Franson and center Mike Santorelli from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In exchange, the Predators will send the Maple Leafs forward Olli Jokinen, prospect Brendan Leipsic, and a 2015 first-round pick.

"In preparation for the 2015 playoff run, our goal was to add a veteran defenseman who could play in all situations and a proven forward who could move up and down lineup based on the situation," Predators general manager David Poile said in a statement. "We were fortunate to do this in the same transaction with players who are in the prime of their careers more than two weeks before the trade deadline in order to give them more time to contribute and gel with their teammates."

Both Franson and Santorelli began their careers with the Predators, and are also both set to become unrestricted free agents at the end of the season.

In 55 games this season, Franson has 32 points, while Santorelli has 29 points in 57 games.

Predators Lose Rinne for 3 to 5 Weeks

Frederick Breedon/Getty Images(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) -- Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne will miss three to five weeks due to a sprained knee, the team announced Thursday.

Rinne was injured in a collision in the third period of the team's win over Vancouver Tuesday night.

"It's a setback, but we'll get over it as a team," Predators head coach Peter Laviolette said. "He'll get over it as a person, and he'll jump back in there."

Rinne leads the league with 29 wins, and is second in goals-against average (1.96) and save percentage (.931).

With Rinne out, the Predators (29-9-4, 62 pts) will turn to Carter Hutton as their No. 1 goaltender. Hutton has appeared in six games this season, compiling a 0-3-2 record with a 2.60 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage.

"I'm just going to play my game," Hutton said. "You never want to see a guy like Pekka go down but that's the way it goes. We went through it last year. I feel like my games have been solid all year. I'm not getting the results I need, but if you look at the individual games and the way the games went down ... I feel good in my game and I know the guys are confident in me and I'm ready to get in there."
