Mets Calling Up Pitcher Noah Syndergaard

Jeffrey Hamilton/Thinkstock(PHILADELPHIA) -- The New York Mets will call up top pitching prospect Noah Syndergaard from Triple-A Las Vegas to start Tuesday's game against the Chicago Cubs.

Syndergaard is taking the place of right-hander Dillon Gee, who was placed on the disabled list with a groin injury.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Syndergaard got the call over fellow prospect Steve Matz because he's spent more time pitching in the (hitter-friendly) Pacific Coast League.

"This is a year-plus in Triple-A," Alderson said of Syndergaard. "He's certainly done a nice job there to date, given his last three starts have been overpowering. So, from that standpoint, we think he's deserving, and he'll be here to pitch."

The 22-year-old Syndergaard has made five starts for Las Vegas this season. During that time he's pitched 29.2 innings compiling 34 strikeouts, eight walks, a 1.82 ERA, and a 0.94 WHIP.

Mets Place Rafael Montero on DL

Jeffrey Hamilton/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- The New York Mets placed pitcher Rafael Montero on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Wednesday, with inflammation in his rotator cuff.

Montero, 24, was originally optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas after his start for the Mets on Tuesday, but the move was changed after finding out about the injury.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson believes the injury is minor.

"We don't expect this to be serious," Alderson said. "But it's another example of what can happen with any starting pitcher."

Montero pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, three runs, and one walk while striking out six on Tuesday -- his only start this season for the Mets.

Mets Comeback vs. Braves to Capture 10th Straight Win

Jeffrey Hamilton/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Lucas Duda hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning that sent the New York Mets to their 10th consecutive victory Wednesday night, 3-2 over the Atlanta Braves.

Wilmer Flores hit a tying homer and an RBI single for the Mets (12-3), to capture their longest winning streak since winning 10 in a row in July of 2008.

Another victory in the series finale Thursday afternoon would match the team record of 11 in a row which was last accomplished in 1990, and the Mets would also complete a perfect 10-0 record on their first homestand of the season.

Despite injuries to several key players, New York is off to its best start since the 1986 World Series champions opened 13-3.

Mets Win Ninth Straight Game

iStockphoto(NEW YORK) -- Curtis Granderson drove in his first four runs of the season and Jonathon Niese (2-0) pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning in the Mets 7-1 win over the Braves on Tuesday night.

With an 11-3 record, the Mets have matched the 1986 championship club for the best 14-game start in team history. The winning streak is their longest since July 5-17, 2008, when the Mets rattled off 10 straight wins. The Mets are 8-0 at home to begin a season for the first time in franchise history.

Kevin Plawecki made his major-league debut for New York, replacing injured catcher Travis d'Arnaud.  Plawecki went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the game.

The Mets will send Dillon Gee to the mound on Wednesday, looking for 10 wins in a row. Gee has made 48 straight starts of at least five innings dating to May 2013, the longest active streak in the majors. The team record is 50 by Dwight Gooden.
