Kentucky Overcomes Late Deficit to KO Notre Dame, Advance to Final Four

Mitchell Layton/Getty Images(CLEVELAND) -- The luck of the Irish ran out.

Leading most of the second half, No. 3 Notre Dame slowly watched top-ranked Kentucky come back and eventually take the lead for good when Andrew Harrison made two free throws with six seconds remaining, as the Wildcats edge the Fighting Irish 68-66 to advance to the Final Four of the Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament.

Kentucky (38-0) gets to continue its undefeated season with large thanks to the Harrison twins. Aaron Harrison made an NBA range 3-pointer with 3:18 remaining to give Kentucky its first lead since the 15:06 mark of the second half. Notre Dame's Jerian Grant answered Harrison's three with one of his own with 2:36 remaining to put Notre Dame up by two. Karl-Anthony Towns then scored two of his game-high 25 points to tie the contest before the other Harrison hit his free throws to seal the game.

Notre Dame (32-6), which had a decided size disadvantage with the Cats, was only outrebounded by one in the loss. It also doubled Kentucky 16-8 in assists.

Zach Auguste scored 20 while Steve Vasturia and Grant added 16 and 15 points respectively in a losing effort.

Kentucky advances to the National Semifinal in Indianapolis next weekend where it will meet Wisconsin.

(3) Notre Dame Survives (14) Northeastern

Joe Robbins/Getty Images(PITTSBURGH) -- Zack Stahl's steal with 30 seconds remaining gave Northeastern a final chance to tie the game, but instead of getting a shot off, Quincy Ford turned the ball back over to Notre Dame. The No. 3 Irish hit two free throws from there to seal a 69-65 win over No. 14 Northeastern in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday.

Notre Dame (30-5) out-scored Northeastern 17-0 off turnovers. Zach Auguste had 25 points and Jerian Grant added 17 for the Irish, who advance to take on No. 6 Butler Saturday.

"I told them in the locker room, we weren't going to beat them by 15," Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey said. "So don't anybody walk out of here feeling we should have won by 15."

Northeastern (23-12), which had shot 48.9 percent from 3-point range in their previous seven games, only connected on 3 of 11 from long distance Thursday.

Scott Eatherton led the Huskies with 18 points in the loss.

(4) Duke Blows Out (10) Notre Dame, 90-60

Streeter Lecka/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The 4th ranked Duke Blue Devils exercised some revenge on Saturday afternoon as they took care of the 10th ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 90-60.

Justise Winslow and Jahilil Okafor led the way for Duke. Winslow broke out of his shooting slump against Notre Dame, as he scored 19 points on 11 shots taken, he pulled down 11 rebounds, had four assists, and two steals.

Okafor was dominant as usual for the Blue Devils. The freshman big man scored 20 points on 9 of 11 shooting, had 10 rebounds, two steals, and also a blocked shot.

Perhaps most impressively, Okafor picked up two fouls in 16 seconds and sat for the final 11:57 of the half.

Guard Matt Jones chipped in with 17 points while Tyrus Jones added 12 points.

Back on Jan. 28, Notre Dame came out on top against Duke, 77-73 at home. Less then 10 days later, Duke responded with a big win that saw them improve to 20-3 on the season.

(12) Notre Dame Edges Miami (FL), 75-70

Joe Robbins/Getty Images(SOUTH BEND, Ind.) -- Led by guard Jerian Grant, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish were able to rally past the Miami Hurricanes 75-70.

Now at 17-2, the Irish have equaled their best start through 19 games, matching the 1978-79 team.

Miami opened the second half with a 13-2 run to take its largest lead. The Irish offense proceeded to turn it on in the second half. Making just two of their first 16 3-point tries, Notre Dame proceeded to hit seven of their next nine 3-point attempts.

Grant led the rally as he scored 23 points on 8 of 10 shooting from the floor to go along with eight assists. Guard Pat Connaughton had a double-double in the game, scoring ten points while pulling down 11 rebounds.

Sheldon McClellan led the Hurricanes with 17 points while Ja'Quan Newton came off the bench to chip in 16 points and five assists in the loss.

Notre Dame picked up a much needed win as they now sit at third in the ACC behind Virginia and Syracuse. Miami (FL) now sits at 8th in the conference.
