Doug Collins Resigns as 76ers Coach

Andy Lyons/Getty Images(PHILADELPHIA) -- Doug Collins has resigned as the Philadelphia 76ers head coach, owner Josh Harris announced Thursday.

Collins will still remain with the team as an adviser. The 76ers finished 34-48 and missed the playoffs for the first time in three seasons.

"This is his decision," Harris said. "He is not being pushed out."

Collins has one year left on his four-year deal worth $4.5 million and cited family reasons for the reason he's stepping down as coach.

"There are a lot of things I want to enjoy," Collins said, who made the decision in December.

The former four-time All-Star for the Sixers coached the team to three straight playoff appearances upon his return to the team in 2010.

ESPN: Doug Collins to Resign as Head Coach for 76ers

NBA via Philadelphia 76ers(PHILADELPHIA) -- Doug Collins' time in Philadelphia seems to be coming to an end. According to ESPN NBA Insider Chris Broussard, Collins will resign from his position as head coach once the season ends.

After leading the team to the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs last season, the Sixers have experienced a heartbreaking season as they will not make the playoffs for the first time under Collins. During the offseason, the team traded away Andre Iguodala, Nikola Vucevic, and Moe Harkless to get center Andrew Bynum.

Bynum never played a single minute for the team this year due to various knee issues, while the players they traded away have flourished. With two games to play, the Sixers are 33-47 after going 35-31 last season.

Collins' ties with the Sixers go beyond coaching. He was a four-time All Star with the Sixers, but had to retire from basketball in 1981 because of a knee injury.

Since Larry Brown left the team in 2003, the Sixers have had seven head coaches, and will soon hire an eighth.

Nuggets Escape Sixers, Win 14th Straight

Doug Pensinger/Getty Images(DENVER) -- The Denver Nuggets are finding new ways to win every night.

Corey Brewer hit three free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining to lift the Denver Nuggets to their 14th straight win, 101-100 over the Philadelphia 76ers.

Down by two with 7.1 seconds left, Philadelphia's Evan Turner went to the free throw line but missed two shots. Then Brewer attempted a three but was fouled by Damien Wilkins.

After the free throws put Denver (48-22) ahead, the 76ers had one last chance but Wilkin's jumper was blocked by Anthony Randolph to end it. "It's crazy. To be honest, I didn't think we had any chance of winning," Brewer said. "Then he missed those free throws and I was like, 'OK, we've got a little chance.' He gave us life."

The 14 straight wins continues the longest win streak in the Nugget's NBA history.

Philadelphia (26-42) has lost two in a row on their four game West Coast trip.

76ers Lose Bynum for Season

NBA Via Philadelphia 76ers (PHILADELPHIA) -- It will be at least another season before Andrew Bynum plays an NBA game for the Philadelphia 76ers.

The 25-year-old's season is officially over after it was announced Bynum would have arthroscopic surgery on both knees Tuesday. Bynum, who was traded by the Los Angeles Lakers to the 76ers in August, has been dealing with knee issues all season and hasn't played a single game.

"After many months of rehabilitation and consulting with numerous doctors, Andrew and the doctors treating him determined that this is the best course of action at this point," Sixers general manager Tony DiLeo said. "We will continue to monitor and evaluate his status moving forward."

Bynum, who won two NBA titles with the Lakers, will earn $16.5 million this season.

Heat Win 17th Straight

Marc Serota/Getty Images(MIAMI) -- LeBron James missed most of the fourth quarter, but the Miami Heat kept their streak alive.

James scored 25 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Heat past the Philadelphia 76ers, 102-93 for their 17th straight victory.

The win matched the longest winning streak in the NBA this season and also equaled the 12th-longest streak in NBA history.

"Good team win, particularly in the second half," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "Our bench was really dialed in."

The Heat (46-14) were down nine in the third quarter, but used a buzzer-beating shot by James to ignite a run into the fourth, where they put the game away with James on the bench for most of the final quarter.

Philadelphia (23-38) got 25 points from Thaddeus Young in the loss.

The win also clinched a playoff spot for the Heat.

Andrew Bynum Suffers Another Setback

NBA Via Philadelphia 76ers (PHILADELPHIA) --  Andrew Bynum may not play this season after all.

After suffering yet another setback in his recovery from knee injuries, any hopes of the center playing this season for the Philadelphia 76ers are fading.

Bynum practiced last week for the first time since coming over in a trade from the Los Angeles Lakers last summer.  He experienced swelling and discomfort in his right knee after the practice and had to be shut down again.

"It's getting late. I don't know," Bynum said when asked about the possibility of a return this season. "I don't want to play in pain. ... I'm 25, it's my life."

The 76ers are currently six games back of the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.  They have 26 games remaining.

Bynum is scheduled to become a free agent after the season.

Knicks End Four Game Slide, Beat Sixers

Rob Carr/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The New York Knicks turned up the intensity to beat the Philadelphia 76ers.

Amare Stoudemire scored 22 points to help the Knicks end a four-game losing streak by beating the Philadelphia 76ers, 99-93.

"Losing games, games we think we're supposed to win, you come into a game like this, we want to win," Carmelo Anthony said. "Definitely want to be a very high-intensity game, a very high-energetic game back here on our home court and we didn't want to lose this game."

Anthony scored 29 points, and was assessed a flagrant foul when he hit Philadelphia's Spencer Hawes in the head going for a rebound. Hawes got in Anthony's face and a mini-scrum esnued that was broken up by the officials.

A brief Sixers rally after that cut the lead to nine, but New York (33-20) answered and held a big lead for most of the fourth quarter.

Ron Elkman/Sports Imagery/ Getty Images(PHILADELPHIA) --  LeBron James posted his 35th career triple-double to lead the Miami Heat to a 114-90 romping of the Philadelphia 76ers, their 10th straight victory.

James had 16 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for the Heat (39-14), who were also led by Dwayne Wade's 33-point effort.

"It was a professional win," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "LeBron started it with his unselfishness, finding the open guy, making it contagious. Then it was an efficient shooting night."

All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday led the 76ers (22-31) with 21 points, while Nick Young added 19.

The Heat now has a 5 1/2 game cushion for the top-seed in the Eastern Conference.
