Flyers Fire Coach Berube

Len Redkoles/Getty Images(PHILADELPHIA, Pa) -- The Philadelphia Flyers have fired head coach Craig Berube Friday after the team finished 33-31-18, placing sixth in the Metro division.

The move comes as a bit of a surprise as general manager Ron Hextall said he would take a "methodical" approach to evaluating the head coach position.

“I'm not going to make a quick decision to appease people, or to follow along like it's supposed to be done. I'm going to do everything I can to do the due diligence that's appropriate to make the decision. Once I get there, then we'll let people know. I'm not going to make a hasty decision and look back and regret it. I'm going to do everything I can to gather all the information out there and make the right decision,” Hextall said Wednesday.

Berube was hired last season and amassed a record of 75-58-28, with just one playoff appearance.

''I think in the end, a coach's job is to get the most out of his players, and in the end that's the conclusion that I came to, was that that wasn't the case,'' Hextall said.

Lightning Acquire Defenseman Braydon Coburn from the Flyers

Len Redkoles/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- As the Tampa Bay Lightning enter the stretch run of the NHL season, the team went out and made their team stronger before the trade deadline as they acquired defenseman Braydon Coburn from the Philadelphia Flyers.

In order to acquire Coburn's services, the Lightning had to give up their 2015 first- and third-round draft picks along with defenseman Radko Gudas.

The Lightning also shipped Brett Connolly to the Boston Bruins for a second-round pick in 2015 and another in 2016.

Coburn led the Flyers this season in average shifts per game at 27.9 and is still a solid defenseman. He had been with the Flyers since the 2006-2007 season. He was also third among Flyers' defensemen in average ice time at 20:14. Coburn has one goal and eight assists in 39 games this season.

Del Zotto Leads Flyers Past N.Y. Rangers, 4-2

Comstock/Thinkstock(PHILADELPHIA) -- Flyers defenseman Michael Del Zotto scored the goal-ahead goal, 1:19 into the third period as Philadelphia (27-25-11; 65pts) doubled up the New York Rangers (38-17-6; 82pts) on Saturday night, 4-2.

Del Zotto with an assist from center Sean Couturier bypassed Rangers goaltender Cam Talbot for the short-handed goal, his 8th of the season. Talbot saved 30-of 33 shots while Flyers goaltender Steve Mason was 34-of-36 in save attempts.

The Rangers had a 2-1 lead after defenseman John Moore scored, 11:55 into the second period, but the Flyers came back to tie it 2:42 later with a goal from forward Michael Raffl.

Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds notched his 25th goal of the year with one second remaining in the game.

Blackhawks Acquire Timonen from Flyers

Len Redkoles/NHLI via Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The Chicago Blackhawks traded a second-round draft pick in 2015 and a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2016 to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for defenseman Kimmo Timonen.

"We've been working on this one for a while," Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman. "He was a defenseman we really wanted. Setting aside the fact he hasn't played, once we get him up to speed, he's a great player. He's been an elite defenseman for a lot of years.

"We looked around at the other guys. When we get him back on his game, he's a great defenseman, low risk, high reward."

The 39-year-old Timonen has not played this season due to blood clots in his lower right leg and both of his lungs, but on Thursday Timonen skated with the Flyers and said he's ready to play.

Timonen ranks third among active defenseman with 571 career points over 15 NHL seasons.

Timonen has declared he will retire at the end of the season.

Bruins' Simon Gagne Will Not Return This Season After Father's Death

Frederick Breedon/Getty Images(BOSTON) -- Veteran forward Simon Gagne has decided he will not return to the team this season due to personal reasons. With the recent death of his father, Gagne will sit out the rest of the season, leaving the rest of his career in doubt.

"The last month has been extremely difficult for me with my father being sick and his passing," Gagne said in a statement released by the team. "To play in the NHL you have to be 100 percent mentally, emotionally and physically committed to the game. At this time I know that I cannot be close to those levels. The Bruins organization and my teammates have been great to my family and I during this time."

Gagne is now considered a suspended player so that the Bruins can maintain a full roster.

The 34-year-old Gagne is in his first season with the Bruins, and it could be his last. He has three goals and one assist in 23 games this season.

Gagne is a former All-Star from his years with the Philadelphia Flyers, but he's had trouble staying on the ice in recent years due to injuries. He's played in over 60 games just once since the 2009-2010 season.
