Rangers Take 3-1 Series Lead with OT Win over Penguins

Jupiterimages/Thinkstock(PITTSBURGH) -- Kevin Hayes and the New York Rangers have the Pittsburgh Penguins on the brink of elimination.

Hayes scored in the first overtime to give the Rangers a 2-1 victory Wednesday night and a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference first-round series.

"It will be a memorable one, for sure," Hayes said after his first playoff goal.

Martin St. Louis took control when he threw the puck in front on a wraparound. The puck pinballed to Carl Hagelin and went across the crease for Hayes to flip it past fallen goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

"I thought two of our guys worked hard and got the puck to the net and it just kind of ended up on my stick," Hayes said.

And he buried it.

But it's nothing new for the rookie, who helped the NHL's best regular-season team to its first Presidents' Trophy since 1994 with 17 goals and 45 points, including a team-best 29 points since the All-Star break.

"This was his best game of the series," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. "We need him to play the way he's played for us throughout the year. Obviously, this is playoff hockey on a bigger stage, but he's learning how to deal with it."

Game 5 is Friday night in New York.

Penguins Letang Released from Hospital

iStockPhoto/Thinkstock(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) -- Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang was released from the hospital Sunday and diagnosed with a concussion after a scary collision in Saturday's game against the Arizona Coyotes.

Letang lay on the ice in a disoriented state when he fell backwards into the boards after a check by Coyotes winger Shane Doan.

"I just went to make sure I got a piece of him so he couldn't jump by me and he obviously went into the boards awkward," Doan said.

"You never ever want to see anyone like that, especially a guy with his caliber and everything he's went through in the past couple years," he added. "You feel awful as a player when something like that happens."

Letang has a history of concussions and suffered a stroke last season, in what doctors attributed to a small hole in his heart.

Currently, there is no scheduled date for Letang's return, according to coach Mike Johnston.

“We'll see how he feels over the next few days and go from there,” Johnston said.

Evgeni Malkin Out 1-2 Weeks

Bruce Bennett/Getty Images(BOCA RATON, Fla.) -- Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford said at the NHL general managers meetings Monday that star forward Evgeni Malkin is expected to miss the next 1-2 weeks with a lower-body injury.

Malkin was injured in the first period of the team's loss to Boston Saturday.

Malkin, a former Hart Trophy winner, has played in 63 games this season, recording 28 goals and 40 assists.

Rutherford also said that forward Patric Hornqvist will miss around one week after being injured in the team's loss to Detroit on Sunday.

Before play Monday, the Penguins sit in third place in the Metropolitan Division, just four points ahead of the Washington Capitals.

Penguins Trade for Winger David Perron

iStockPhoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired winger David Perron from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Robert Klinkhammer and a 2015 first-round pick Friday.

The 26-year-old Perron moves from one of the worst teams in the league in Edmonton to one of the best in Pittsburgh.

“Having this kind of opportunity is pretty surreal," Perron told the team's official website. "We all know the type of players this team has. I’m going to come in, work as hard as I can and try to fit in anyway that I can.”

Perron's contract expires after next season, and has a salary-cap hit of $3.812 million.

The 6-foot, 200 pound Perron is coming off a season where he scored a career-high 28 goals for Edmonton. He has 19 points in 38 games this season.
