Female Fan Ok After Taking Foul Ball to Head at Pirates Game

iStock/Thinkstock(PITTSBURGH) -- A scary moment occurred in the top of the second inning of the Pittsburgh Pirates game Monday night, as a foul tip ricocheted and struck a female fan in the head.

As Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro swung just underneath a pitch from A.J. Burnett, the ball screamed off his bat towards the protective netting behind home plate. A woman leaving her seat was hit in the back of the head and collapsed.

The game was delayed 23 minutes as she was treated, removed on a stretcher and taken to the hospital for treatment.

The Pirates released a statement:

During the top of the second inning a female fan was struck in the head with a foul ball.

After initial treatment by PNC Park and Pittsburgh EMS personnel, she was placed on a stretcher, moved to a nearby ambulance and brought to the hospital for further treatment.  She was conscious and alert at the time of transport, graciously thanking her caregivers while giving a “thumbs up” gesture to nearby fans.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her.

The Cubs would win the game 5-2.

Paul Spinelli/MLB Photos via Getty Images(SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates won their arbitration case with second baseman Neil Walker Saturday.

The 29-year-old Walker asked for $9 million but will instead receive $8 million for the 2015 season. Walker is a Super 2 player meaning he is eligible for arbitration in 2016 as well.

The new deal is still a raise for Walker, who made $5.75 million last season.

Pirates Win Negotiating Rights to Korean Shortstop Jung-Ho Kang

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(PITTSBURGH) -- Already having one of the best offenses in baseball, the Pittsburgh Pirates are taking a shot on an international player as they have won the negotiating rights to Korean shortstop Jung-Ho Kang.

The Pirates now have 30 days to negotiate a contract with the international star, or he'll head back to Korea. If a deal is reached, the Pirates will pay the Nexen Heroes the posting fee of $5,002,015.

"The Pirates are pleased to have secured the opportunity to attempt to add Kang, Jung Ho to our system and look forward to commencing discussions with the player and his representative in an effort to make that happen," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said in a statement.

The 27-year-old Kang hit .354 with 39 home runs this past season for the Heroes, and was named the MVP of the Korean Baseball Organization.

The Pirates are hoping Kang can provide some infield depth for the club behind second baseman Neil Walker and shortstop Jordy Mercer.
