Miami Edges Seattle on Carpenter Kick

Marc Serota/Getty Images(MIAMI) -- The Miami Dolphins were looking to end a three-game losing streak on Sunday at home, and did so largely on the strength of a rookie quarterback.

Dan Carpenter kicked a game-winning 43-yard field goal as time expired, and the Dolphins beat the Seattle Seahawks 24-21 at Sun Life Stadium.

The Dolphins (5-6) marched down the field on a six-play, 65-yard drive to set up the winning kick, all enginereed by quarterback Ryan Tannehill. "You're excited," he said of the drive. "You know your team needs you to step up."

For Seattle (6-5), it was a frusturating loss after rookie quarterback Russell Wilson went 21 of 27 for 224 yards and two touchdowns. The Seahawks had a fourth-quarter goal-line interception of Tannehill called back after a roughing the passer call that was heavily questioned after the game.

"I'm disappointed in all phases of the game," Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. "We didn't do the things we needed to do in the week off to get prepared. I screwed it up."

Dolphins Hold On To Beat Rams

Chris Trotman/Getty Images(MIAMI) -- The Miami Dolphins are right in the middle of a suddenly crowded AFC East.

Ryan Tannehill threw for two touchdowns and the Dolphins held on to beat the St. Louis Rams, 17-14 at Sun Life Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Rams (3-3) had a chance to tie the game with 30 seconds left, but rookie Greg Zuerlein missed a 66-yard field goal wide left. "I can make that kick. I just didn't come through," Zuerlein said. "I came across the ball a little bit. I should have made it." The kick would have been an NFL record if it had been successful.

The Dolphins (3-3) moved into a first place tie with every other team in the AFC East with the win, despite being outgained 462-192 in total yards. The Dolphins moved ahead 17-6 in the third quarter after Tannehill threw a one yard touchdown to tight end Anthony Fasano.

Tannehill finished with 185 yards passing and two touchdown strikes.

The Rams got over 100 yards rushing and over 300 yards passing from quarterback Sam Bradford, but only managed one touchdown.

"We had a lot of opportunities to win this game, but we didn't get it done," head coach Jeff Fisher said.

Dolphins Cut QB David Garrard

NFL via Getty Images(MIAMI) -- The Dolphins released Pro Bowl quarterback David Garrard on Tuesday, leaving Matt Moore as their backup.  Miami will begin the season with rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill under center.

The 34-year-old Garrard signed with the Dolphins last March and was installed as their starting quarterback. During the pre-season, Garrard went down with a left knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery.

The Dolphins selected Tannehill out of Texas A&M with the eighth overall pick in this year’s NFL draft.

Dolphins Name Ryan Tannehill Starting Quarterback

Joel Auerbach/Getty Images(MIAMI) -- The Miami Dolphins announced on Monday that rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill will be starting under center for the team’s season opener against the Houston Texans. He edged out last season’s starter, Matt Moore.

The Dolphins selected Tannehill out of Texas A&M with the eighth overall pick in this year’s NFL draft. During his career with the Aggies, the 24-year-old was named first-team academic all-Big 12 three times.

David Garrard was set to begin the season as the Dolphins' starting quarterback, but he has been sidelined since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery earlier this month.

Dolphins Agree to deal with Ryan Tannehill

Joel Auerbach/Getty Images(DAVIE, FLORIDA) -- The Miami Dolphins agreed to terms with quarterback Ryan Tannehill, the former Texas A&M quarterback drafted eighth overall in April's NFL Draft

Tannehill was forced to hold out at the start of training camp because his team was not yet completed.  Tannehill did not want to miss any more time as he wanted to join his teammates and get to work.

Tannehill had already missed the first two days of camp and is expected to compete for the starting job along with veterans Matt Moore and David Garrard.

Terms of the contract were not announced.  Tannehill started 19 games at Texas A&M and his head coach was Mike Sherman, who is now the offensive coordinator for the Dolphins.

Tannehill is the first quarterback picked in the first round by the Dolphins since drafting Hall of Fame Dan Marino back in 1983.

Texas A&M Quarterback Tannehill Breaks Foot, Will Miss Senior Bowl

Darren Carroll/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- With quarterbacks such as USC's Matt Barkley and Oklahoma's Landry Jones deciding to stay in school for another year, Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill has an opportunity to establish himself as a top quarterback prospect. He just won't be able to show his skills at the Senior Bowl.

According to Tannehill's agent, Pay Dye, his client broke his foot during training and as a result will be unable to showcase his skills at the annual Senior Bowl, which is an event where numerous NFL scouts and coaches attend. Tannehill broke a fifth metatarsal, which might require surgery.

Even if he does indeed have surgery and has to also miss the NFL scouting combine, he is still expected to throw in March before the draft takes place. ESPN has ranked Tannehill as the third best quarterback prospect in this year's draft.
