Mariners Recall Jesus Montero

Jason Wise/MLB Photos via Getty Images(SEATTLE) -- Jesus Montero is returning to the MLB following a 50-game suspension after being connected to baseball's Biogenesis performance-enhancing drug investigation.

The Mariners recalled Montero on Thursday and manager Lloyd McClendon said they will use him against left-handers and as a designated hitter.

"I feel great to be here. I feel like I've earned it," Montero said. "I feel like I learned something. Now I want to be here forever."

McClendon feels that Montero deserves another shot and believes he's learned from his past mistakes.

"I think he's trying to get things back together. He's been working hard and he's actually been swinging the bat better than the numbers indicated down there," McClendon said. "For me he was the logical choice. ...It made sense to bring this young man and give him an opportunity."

The former top prospect was hitting .270 with eight homers and 15 doubles at Triple-A.

Hernandez Improves to 8-1 in 10-2 Drubbing of Yankees

Mike Stobe/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Kyle Seager had four extra base hits while Felix Hernandez struck out eight in seven innings, pacing the Seattle Mariners to a 10-2 win over the New York Yankees. Hernandez improves to 8-1 on the season and won his fifth straight start.

Seager had two triples, a double, and a home run as part of his three RBI night. It was the first time since Montreal's Hal Breeden in 1973 that a player had two triples, at least one homer and a double in a single game.

His second triple occurred when a fly ball down the line in left was bobbled by Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, then kicked around by Derek Jeter. Seager kept running as Jeter thought the ball was foul, helping aid in the feat.

Hernandez's only blemish came in the fourth inning when he kicked his foot out and deflected an Ichiro Suzuki single, scoring two runs. Aside from that, King Felix was dominant. The righty has not lost in nine starts and holds a record of 5-1 at the new Yankee Stadium.

New York (29-27) has now dropped four of their last six games while Seattle (29-28) has won three straight.

Hisashi Iwakuma Set to Make Season Debut for the Mariners Saturday

Mike McGinnis/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Reinforcements are coming for the Seattle Mariners as starting pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma is set to make his season debut for the club on Saturday against the Houston Astros.

Iwakuma was out of action for over two months after he strained a tendon in the middle finger in his right hand. He was trying to retrieve a ball from some netting and his finger was caught in the process.

The Mariners are throwing Iwakuma straight into the fire as he made just one rehab start for Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday.

At 12-14 in the competetive AL West, the return of Iwakuma will be embraced by the Mariners clubhouse. The team currently ranks 12th in Major League Baseball in team ERA, and his return should help out even more.

In 2013, Iwakuma was one of the best starters in the American League. He went 14-6 with a 2.84 ERA with 185 strikeouts.
