Hisashi Iwakuma Has Setback, Shut Down for Up to 2 Weeks

Rob Carr/Getty Images(SEATTLE) -- Seattle Mariners right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma has been shut down from pitching for at least the next 10 days after feeling continued tightness in his strained right lat muscle during a throwing session.

"It's a tough situation," Iwakuma said through a translator. "I took about a week off and then started throwing for about a week. But I still felt something inside. It's not pain, it's more tightness. We want to make sure I feel nothing when I throw next time."

There is no timetable for Iwakuma's return, but he can't throw again until approximately May 22.

Iwakuma has been on the disabled list since April 24. Before that, the 34-year-old made three starts, pitching 16 1/3 innings with 11 strikeouts, a 6.61 ERA, and a 1.41 WHIP.

The 26-year-old left-hander Roenis Elias will continue to start in Iwakuma's place.
