Cardinals Place Pitcher Jaime Garcia On the DL

Bob Levey/Getty Images(ST. LOUIS) -- The St. Louis Cardinals pitching depth will be tested even further as the team has announced they've placed starting pitcher Jaime Garcia on the disabled list.

Garcia will be shut down because of a left shoulder strain. The team had hoped he could pitch through the injury without having to miss anytime, but it was took much for Garcia to take.

Garcia also dealt with shoulder issues last season, and those issues seem like they could be returning. He will visit Dr. James Andrews for his opinion, but he feels like his shoulder issues now could be worse than last year's.

"I would say at this point it's worse," Garcia said via MLB.com's Jennifer Langosch. "There's a lot more pain than last year. It started three starts ago. I was feeling great until that point. I basically tried to take care of doing little things here and there and it went downhill getting worse and worse."

When asked about the possibility of facing surgery, Garcia sounded worried.

"I'm very concerned, especially with the way I felt last night and the way I feel today," he added.

Along with Garcia, the Cardinals also have starters Chris Carpenter and Jake Westbrook on the DL.

New York Mets Sign Free Agent Outfielder Rick Ankiel

Tony Firriolo/MLB Photos via Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The New York Mets agreed to a contract with free agent outfielder Rick Ankiel. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

The 33-year-old Ankiel was cut loose earlier this month by the Houston Astros after batting .194, with three doubles, five home runs and 11 RBIs in 25 games. Last season with the Washington Nationals, he hit .228 with five homers and 15 RBIs in 68 games.

Ankiel originally came up as a pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1999 but was converted into an outfielder in 2005 due to control issues with his throwing.

To make room on the 25-man roster, the Mets sent outfielder Andrew Brown to Triple-A Las Vegas and transferred pitcher Jenrry Mejia to the 60-day disabled list on the 40-man roster.

Cardinals' Closer Jason Motte to Undergo Tommy John Surgery

Eliot J. Schechter/MLB Photos via Getty Images(MILWAUKEE) -- After a breakout season in 2012, St. Louis Cardinals closer Jason Motte will miss the rest of the season after it was determined he needed to undergo Tommy John Surgery.

Motte was placed on the disabled list back on March 29 with a torn ligament in his right elbow.

He was undergoing rehab and played catch all season to avoid surgery, but after a recent bullpen session the team decided it would be best for Motte to undergo the procedure.

Last season, Motte tied for the National League-lead in saves with 42. During the team's World Series run in 2011, Motte emerged as the team's closer when he saved five games en route to the championship.

Unfortunately, Motte will never throw a meaningful pitch for the Cardinals in 2012, and he'll likely miss part of the 2013 season as well.

Mitchell Boggs has struggled to replace Motte as the team's closer, blowing two saves and having a 12.66 ERA. Edward Mujica will take over as the team's closer for now.
