Russell made 50 percent of his shots and went 4 of 7 from 3-point distance, leading Ohio State (24-10) to their first tournament win since 2013.

The victory did not come easily for the Buckeyes. They fell behind by 12 in the first half before battling back to make it a one-point game at halftime. From that point on, there were nine lead-changes before the Buckeyes improved their NCAA Tournament record under head coach Thad Matta to 18-8.

Jae'Sean Tate had 12 points and eight boards while guard Shannon Scott dished out 10 assists in the victory.

Melvin Johnson scored 17 points for VCU (26-10) who is going home in their tournament opener for the second straight season.

No. 3 Ohio State Rolls Over Nebraska 84-53

Mitchell Layton/Getty Images (COLUMBUS, Ohio.) --  A balanced attack from Thad Matta's squad led to yet another blowout victory for No. 3 Ohio State.

Amedeo Della Valle scored 15 points, Marc Loving added a career-high 13 off the bench as the Buckeyes rolled over Nebraska 84-53 on Saturday.

The Buckeyes (15-0, 2-0 Big Ten) pulled away early in the second half behind large contributions from their second unit.  Starters Shannon Scott and Amir Williams combined to score 23 points as Ohio State shot 54 percent from the field.

"I like this group," Matta said of his second unit. "Because the big thing that you want as a coach is guys to understand what they're supposed to do when they go in. I think they saw today that maybe we weren't as focused as we needed to be in a couple of areas and they brought that to the table."

Terran Petteway paced the Cornhuskers (8-6, 0-2) with 15 points.

Jamie Sabau/Getty Images(COLUMBUS, OH) -- The third ranked Ohio State Buckeyes (21-3) hung on and beat Big Ten rival Purdue (15-9), 87-84 in Columbus Tuesday night.

Buckeyes' senior guard William Buford led the way with 29 points.

"They came out ready to play." Buford said after the game. "They threw the first punch. We didn't lock up defensively how we needed to, how we knew to lock up....But down the stretch, we ended up locking up on defense and executing on offense."

The win was Ohio States sixth straight, and gives it a game and a half lead over Michigan St. in the Big Ten.
