Phaneuf Signs 7-Year Extension with Leafs

Len Redkoles/NHLI via Getty Images(ANN ARBOR, Mich.) -- The Toronto Maple Leafs signed defenseman Dion Phaneuf to a seven-year, $49 million contract extension Tuesday, that keeps him with the club through the 2020-21 season

"This is a very proud day for me and my family," said Phaneuf. "I'm very honored to be the captain of this historic franchise and to maintain the opportunity to play and represent the Toronto Maple Leafs for many years to come. We have passionate fans and a dedicated ownership group. I have great teammates and look forward to growing with them and achieving our goal of winning."

Phaneuf, 28, was acquired by the Leafs in a 2010 trade with the Calgary Flames. Since joining the club, Phaneuf has 35 goals and 92 assists.

Phaneuf, a three-time All-Star, leads Toronto this season in ice time, averaging 24:21 minutes a game, and has four goals and eleven assists in 39 games.

Report: Rafael Furcal Joining Marlins 

Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Infielder Rafael Furcal has agreed to a one-year contract with the Miami Marlins, according to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

The 36-year-old Furcal missed all of 2013 while recovering from Tommy John Surgery on his right elbow.

According to Rosenthal, the Marlins will use Furcal at second base, a position he has only played 36 games at during his major league career.

The three-time All-Star is a career .281 hitter with 1,059 runs scored, 113 home runs, 585 RBIs and 314 stolen bases.
