Florida Ends 2014 Season on High Note, Top ECU in the Birmingham Bowl

iStockPhoto/Thinkstock(BIRMINGHAM, Ala.) -- After a disappointing regular season, the Florida Gators have some momentum heading into 2015 after defeating East Carolina 28-20 in the Birmingham Bowl on Saturday.

Gators quarterback Treon Harris didn't have his best game of the season, but he was good enough as he completed five of 11 passes for 123 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

With the Pirates closing in, Harris threw an 86-yard touchdown to Ahmad Fulwood to give Florida a 28-14 lead.

But arguably the story of the game was when Harris left the game in the third quarter with a leg injury. In came junior quarterback and former starter Jeff Driskel.

On Saturday, new Gators head coach Jim McElwain confirmed that Driskel has asked for and received his release from his scholarship.

"That's up to him," McElwain said on Driskel's possible return. "We all have choices, and I'm not going to hold him hostage."

Driskel went eight of 17 for 48 yards in what was likely his final game with the team.

Gators Make QB Change

iStockPhoto/Thinkstock(GAINESVILLE, Fla.) -- In the midst of a tough season, the Florida Gators decided to make a change: Florida head coach Will Muschamp named true freshman Treon Harris the team's starting quarterback.

Harris takes over for fourth year junior Jeff Driskel.

Harris was suspended earlier this season while police investigated an accusation of sexual battery from another student. Five days after the suspension was announced, Harris was reinstated because the accuser withdrew her complaint.

Last week, Harris came into the game against Missouri in the fourth quarter, completing 8-of-12 passes for 98 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He also ran for a three yard touchdown.

"You saw what he did late in the game," Muschamp said Wednesday. "He has a knack for making plays and making some good things happen for our football team. We've struggled with production at the quarterback position, and that's been an issue for us along with others. Been a huge issue for us."

Despite Harris being named starter, Muschamp says Driskel still has a role with the Gators (3-3, 2-3 SEC).

Florida is on a bye this week. Their next game is Nov. 1 in Jacksonville versus Georgia.
