Angelique Kerber Eliminates Venus Williams at U.S. Open

Matthew Stockman/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Angelique Kerber defeated Venus Williams 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 Thursday night in their second-round match.  The crowd was clearly behind Williams throughout but Kerber would not be intimidated in a match that lasted 2 hours, 45 minutes.

"Venus is such a great player and she won so many Grand Slams, so I'm very happy to beat here here," said Kerber after the match.  "Everybody was against me but it doesn't matter."

"I just tried to focus on me, try to play my game plan, fighting every point until the last," said Kerber.  "I'm very happy to be in the third round here."

Williams had won at Flushing Meadows in 2000 and 2001 but would not make any excuses afterwards.

"I made 60 errors, it's very difficult to win a match like that and I fought as hard as I could," said Williams.  "Unfortunately I was fighting her and me."

As for the crowd rallying behind Williams.

"I know this is not proper tennis etiquette, but this is the first time I've ever played here that the crowd has been behind me like that. Today I felt American, you know, for the first time at the U.S. Open," Williams said. "So I've waited my whole career to have this moment and here it is."

Serena Williams Wants to Compete at 2016 Olympic Games

LUIS ACOSTA/AFP/GettyImages(LONDON) -- Even with a career Golden Slam, Serena Williams is hungry for more.  After defeating Maria Sharapova for the gold medal on Saturday, Williams plans on defending that title in 2016 at the Rio de Janeiro games.

"I plan on being there unless an act of God doesn't allow me to," the fourth-ranked Williams said Monday on ABC's Good Morning America.

Williams and her sister Venus picked up double's gold on Sunday to complete the London Games sweep and still feels she can compete at the highest level, even at the age of 30. Twenty-seven-year-old Michael Phelps, the 18-time gold medalist, has said that these London Games would be the last of his competition career.

"When I feel I can't be the greatest I shouldn't play anymore, but I feel I belong. I'm not tired. I'm enjoying myself," said Williams.

Williams joined Steffi Graff as the only other Women's player to complete a golden slam and will compete in the U.S. Open later this month.

Clive Brunskill/Getty Images(WIMBLEDON, England) -- Serena and Venus Williams won the women’s doubles title at the London Games Sunday, defeating Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

It’s the third time the Williams sisters have won the Olympic gold medal (2000 and 2008) in doubles, and the seventh time that an American duo has won the title.

On Saturday, Serena became just the second woman in history to win the Golden Slam, when she defeated Maria Sharapova in straight sets to take home the gold in women’s singles.

Serena Williams wins Wimbledon Title

MIGUEL MEDINA/AFP/GettyImages(WIMBLEDON, England) -- Serena Williams defeated Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 to win her fifth Wimbledon title on Saturday at the All England Club.

The No.6 Williams let the second set slip away but came back firing and tied her sister, Venus with five titles across the pond.

"When I hit that backhand I was like oh my God, it had been so long and I've been fighting for so long," Williams told ESPN.  "It was time, it felt amazing."

This was Williams 14th major championship and by the way she played on Saturday, it looks like there will be a lot more to come.  Venus gave Serena advice as the roof closed on Centre Court during the rain delay after the first set.

"She was like you're playing good and she was telling me how to stay calm even though I didn't listen to her," Williams said.  "But I definitely took that to heart in the third set."

Williams finished with 17 aces and a record 102 for the tournament.

Venus Williams Knocked Out of Wimbledon in First Round

MIGUEL MEDINA/AFP/GettyImages(WIMBLEDON, England) -- Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams fell to Elena Vesnina on Monday in her opening match 6-1, 6-3.

The last time Williams lost in the first round was in 1997.

"Give credit to her (Vesnina), she played well, made hardly any errors and served well," said Williams who was making her 16th straight appearance at Wimbledon.  "Obviously I would've liked to have won the match, but it didn't happen today."

This was Williams' second Grand Slam appearance since pulling out of her second-round match of the U.S. Open last year, revealing that she'd been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.  Williams lost in the second round at the French Open two weeks ago.

"I come into tournaments with a positive attitude," Williams said. "I don't really feel like talking about my health now. It is what it is. I'm just a couple of months into getting back on tour. Life is challenging but I'm always up for a challenge."

Venus Williams Out At The French Open

Julian Finney/Getty Images(PARIS) -- Venus Williams is out at the French Open, losing Wednesday in the second round to the No. 3-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, 6-2, 6-3. It took Radwanska just 60 minutes to defeat the seven-time Grand Slam champion.

The 31-year-old Williams was diagnosed with Sjogren’s syndrome last August, causing her to miss the U.S. Open and the Australian Open.

“This tournament, for me, was all about getting to the Olympics, as I have said a couple million times,” Williams said. “If that happens for me, and I think the chances are good, then I come out a victor. So that’s why I was here.”

Williams' loss came one day after her sister Serena was eliminated in the first round.
