Rangers Complete Comeback, Beat Capitals in OT in Game 7

Scott Levy/NHLI via Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- For the second time in a year, the Rangers completed a 3-1 deficit to win a series in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

New York found themselves in another overtime game against the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night. Derek Stepan took a whirl at a Dan Girardi rebounder that went past Braden Holtby, who was on his backside and too late to stop the second shot.

"We have a good group that keeps their wits about them and keeps calm," Stepan said. "There is no real panic. We just go out and play. We just see what happens and we just play hockey."

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist made save after save as the Capitals applied pressure during the first six minutes of overtime before Stepan's goal.

"It's a very special win," said Lundqvist, who won his sixth Game 7 of his career and made 35 saves.

Each game was decided by one goal.

New York will now host the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals on Saturday.

Save Kreider: Late Goal Sends Game to OT, Keeps Rangers' Season Alive

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- With the New York Rangers trailing by one with 1:41 remaining in regulation, Chris Kreider scored to send send the game into overtime where Ryan McDonagh slapped in the game-winner, as the Rangers top the Washington Capitals 2-1 Friday, in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The Capitals now lead the best-of-seven series, 3-2.

It was a thriller at Madison Square Garden. The game was scoreless until the third period where after a turnover, Curtis Glencross had a breakaway. Glencross peppered a shot off Henrik Lundqvist that rebounded back to him. He took advantage and put the puck in the net to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead with 9:06 remaining.

Late in the game it looked like the Capitals were going to clinch a trip to the conference final, but just as Lundqvist was heading off the ice to give the Blue Shirts an extra attacker, Kreider scored to send the contest into overtime.

In overtime the one time hero became the goat. Glencross turned over the puck in the Rangers' offensive zone. After a couple of passes, Derek Stepan faked a shot and then sent the puck backwards to a wide open McDonagh who slapped it past Braden Holtby at the 10:23 mark, to force a Game 6.

The Rangers and Capitals will duel again on Sunday in Washington at 7 p.m. ET.

Islanders Knock Off Capitals in OT, Take 2-1 Series Lead

iStockPhoto/Thinkstock(UNIONDALE, N.Y.) -- Islanders captain John Tavares scored 15 seconds into overtime to lift the New York Islanders to a 2-1 win in Game 3 of their first-round playoff series over the Washington Capitals on Sunday.

The game was decided quickly in the extra period after the Islanders allowed the Capitals to tie the game on a Nicklas Backstrom goal with just over six minutes remaining in the third.

In overtime, Nikolay Kulemin's initial shot was stopped by Braden Holtby, who then tried to direct the rebound into the right corner. The puck went to Tavares, who put it in the net before Holtby could cover the right post.

The Islanders have taken a 2-1 series lead with Game 4 in Long Island on Tuesday.

Capitals Erase 3-1 Deficit to Beat Islanders, Even Series

Len Redkoles/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) -- Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and two assists to help the Washington Capitals erase a 3-1 deficit to top the New York Islanders 4-3.

The win evens the best-of-seven first-round playoff series at a game apiece.

Washington wins despite not having starting goaltender Braden Holtby, who was sick. The Caps called up Philipp Grubauer from the minors, and he made 18 saves in the victory.

The Islanders got on the board first when Cal Clutterbuck scored 5:14 into the game. Ryan Strome then scored 3:24 into the second period to put the Islanders up 2-0. The two teams then traded goals before Alex Ovechkin scored the 32nd playoff goal of his career to make it 3-2.

Washington took advantage of an early power play in the third period when Backstrom found the back of the net to tie the game. Jason Chimera gave the Caps the lead for good less than four minutes later when he took the rebound off of his original shot and wristed the puck past Jaroslav Halak.

The series now shifts to Long Island, where Game 3 will be held on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.
