UConn Women Are National Champions Once Again

Chris Graythen/Getty Images(NEW ORLEANS) -- The Lady Huskies came up aces again. UConn won its eighth NCAA title by destroying Louisville 90-63 Tuesday night.

It is the biggest margin of victory ever in a title game.

Freshman guard Breanna Stewart scored 23 points en route to being dubbed the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four. Stewart becomes just the fourth freshman ever to win that award.

"During the day today waiting for the game I was like oh my god, I'm ready to play...Lets go," Stewart said when asked if she was nervous. "And then, as the game started obviously there was nerves. But then it just went to this is basketball...this is just a basketball game."

The victory also means UConn head coach Geno Auriemma has now won eight NCAA titles, tying him with Pat Summitt for the most in women's basketball history.

As for Louisville, a 5-seed, this ends a run where it beat a four seed, two 2-seeds, and top-ranked Baylor to reach the championship game.

"We just didn't have quite enough tonight," Louisville head coach Jeff Walz said. "But its not because we didn't compete and we competed for all 40 minutes. I'm proud of every single one of our players. It's going to go down as one of the greatest runs in women's basketball."

This is UConn's first championship since 2010.
