Woman Drives Drunk, Hits Child with Car

(MEMPHIS, Tenn.) -- A woman was arrested after she drove drunk through an apartment complex and struck a child with her car.

According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, Angelique Brooks, 38, drove into the complex and struck the child, who was not seriously hurt. Brooks then allegedly got out of the car and allowed her son to take the wheel.

Brooks had been spotted driving erratically before the accident, according to the Commercial Appeal. She told police that she had consumed around five beers. She registered a .155 on a Breathalyzer test.

Brooks was charged with driving under the influence, failure to report an accident and reckless driving, among other charges

Two Injured in Shooting, Suspect Claims He Only Meant to Shoot One

(MEMPHIS, Tenn.) -- A man arrested earlier this week for shooting a pair of men told police that he only intended to shoot one of them.

According to the Commercial Appeal, Khalil Woods, 33, opened fire in the Southeast Memphis area. A witness identified Woods, according to the Commercial Appeal, and Woods explained to police that he only intended to shoot one of the victims.

Both of the two shooting victims were transported to the hospital with non-critical injuries.

Woods was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and is held on $250,000 bail.

Tennessee Hospital Care Spending Ranks 10th Lowest in US

(MEMPHIS, Tenn.) -- Tennessee's hospital care spending is the 10th lowest figure in the nation.

The figure, which averages to $2,160 per person in 2009, includes outpatient care, operating room fees and physician residents, according to the Memphis Daily News. It is approximately $300 below the national average in 2009.

Spending figures vary throughout the country, with Arizona,Alabama, California,  Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Nevada, Texas and Utah joining Tennessee in the lowest hospital spending figures per capita in the U.S.

According to the Daily News, because of these figures, Tennessee hospitals are paid less than the "standard rate" for their services.

Tennessee Among Top Ten States For Losses Due to Hail

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) --  Tennessee ranked sixth on State Farm’s list of the ten states who rack up the most losses due to damage caused by hail each year.

In 2012 there were 24,000 claims filed due to losses from hail and wind damage in Tennessee, according to data released by the insurance company on Monday. Texas took the top spot, with 47,000 claims, and border states Kansas and Missouri also made the list.

State Farm says that hail damage costs the company and its policy holders $3.9 billion in 2012.

State Farm advises people who live in affected areas to park their cars in covered areas during storms, and consider investing in impact resistant roofing.

Overall Crime Down in Tenn, Increase in Murders and Assaults

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) -- Overall crime in Tennessee was down in 2012, though there were more murders and assaults, according to the annual Crime in Tennessee report released Monday.

The report, released by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation found that the number of reported crimes across the state decreased 2.8 percent since 2011. The bad news is that murders increased by 1.6 percent, and assaults increased by nearly 8 percent.

Fifty seven percent of reported crimes were against property, 28.5 percent were against people, and 14.5 percent of crimes were crimes against society.

The report also found that 8.2 percent of arrests were of juveniles, and 51 percent of crimes against people were cases of domestic violence.
