Arizona Legislature Passes Law to Ban Disruptive Funeral Protests

(PHOENIX) -- After hearing that protestors from the infamous Westboro Baptist Church planned to protest the funeral of the nine-year-old girl killed Saturday in Tucson, Arizona legislators sprung into action late Tuesday to pass a piece of legislation banning disruptive protests near a funeral. HB 2011, sponsored by Democratic Representative Kyrstem Sinema of Phoenix, had more than 50 co-sponsors.

The bill reads: "A person shall not picket or engage in other protest activities, and an association or corporation shall not cause picketing or other protest activities to occur, within 300 feet of the property line of any residence, cemetery, funeral home, church, synagogue or other establishment during or within one hour before or one hour after the conducting of a funeral or burial service at that place."

The bill defines "other protest activities" as "any action that is disruptive or that is undertaken to disrupt or disturb a funeral or burial service."

The law, expected to be signed by Governor Jan Brewer, makes it a misdemeanor to violate the statutes.

Doctor Says Congresswoman Giffords Breathing On Her Own

(TUCSON, Ariz.) -- The neurosurgeon who is overseeing the care of injured Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords said on Tuesday she is now capable of breathing on her own. Doctors, however, are still using a respirator to facilitate her breating and recovery.

Doctors have said over the last several days her status has not changed dramatically, which has been a good sign, and that she has been able to respond to some personal contact and give a thumbs-up.

Hospital officials at University Medical Center at the University of Arizona caution the public about being too inquisitive about her recovery, saying she has a long road ahead of her.
