(WASHINGTON) -- A state-of-the-art greenhouse farm will be built in Ward 8, in an effort to have more fresh food available to Washington, D.C. residents.

On Thursday, a partnership was launched between the District and BrightFarms to build the 100,000 square-foot greenhouse farm. According to Mayor Vincent Gray's office, the farm is designed to generate up to one million pounds of local produce per year.

"By growing locally, BrightFarms delivers produce that is thousands of miles fresher, more flavorful and better for the community," a release stated.

The project is expected to create about 100 jobs during the construction phase and 25 full-time jobs.
