Afghan Prison Officials Tricked into Releasing 12 Taliban Fighters

Digital Vision/Thinkstock(KANDAHAR, Afghanistan) -- Prison officials in Kandahar were tricked into releasing a dozen Taliban fighters earlier this week.

BBC News reports that a letter was sent to the prison earlier this week that requesting the release of 30 prisoners. Eighteen of the inmates were due to be freed, but the other 12 were not.

Two of the 12 incorrectly released prisoners have been recaptured, BBC News says.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the deceit. An investigation is being conducted to determine how the prisoners were incorrectly released.

In January, Afghan President Hamid Karzai announced that many prisoners previously held by U.S. forces in Bagram jail would be released, a decision that the U.S. was heavily concerned by.
