Afghanistan Landslides May Have Killed 2,000 or More

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(BADAKHSHAN, Afghanistan) -- A local Afghan governor said on Saturday that landslides in the Badakhshan region may have killed over 2,000 people.

About 700 people have been displaced, said UN spokesman Ari Gaitanis. Many people have been buried under up to 30 feet of debris, meaning only 350 people have been found and confirmed dead.

Gaitanis called the situation "pretty grim," adding that up to 300 homes in one village were affected. An unknown number of rescuers were apparently killed in subsequent landslides.
