Amanda Knox Awaits Verdict in Yet Another Trial

Ida Astute/ABC News(ROME) -- In Italy Thursday, it's another day of reckoning for American student Amanda Knox.

Knox, fearful of being imprisoned again, is remaining in her hometown of Seattle for Thursday’s verdict.  It will be the fourth and likely not the final in a series of trials that has lasted almost seven years.

The impassioned final arguments of Knox’s defense lawyer Thursday morning conveyed the frustration felt by all involved in the case.  Despite three long trials and scant and contested DNA evidence, little new light has been shed on the involvement of Knox in the murder of British student Meredith Kercher.

Knox and then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were found guilty in the first trial and spent almost four years behind bars before the initial verdict was overturned.  Then, last year, Italy’s highest court overturned that acquittal, describing the ruling as full of "contradictions and inconsistencies."

If found guilty later Thursday, Knox and Sollecito can appeal to Italy’s supreme court.
