Angela Merkel Wins Re-Election in Germany

Sean Gallup/Getty Images(BERLIN) -- Chancellor Angela Merkel won re-election despite finishing short of an absolute majority in Sunday's vote.

Merkel is set to take on her third term after her Christian Democratic Union collected 41.5 percent of the vote on Sunday. The Free Democrats, the party with which Merkel had worked most closely with in the past four years, lost their spot in the German Parliament after they fell short of the five percent cutoff.

The result was the best for the Christian Democrat party in over 20 years.

Merkel's re-election for a third term puts her on track to overtake Margaret Thatcher as Europe's longest-serving female leader.
