Cyclone Phailin Makes Landfall in Eastern India, 14 Dead

MANAN VATSYAYANA/AFP/Getty Images(NEW DELHI) -- Cyclone Phailin made landfall on the east coast of India on Saturday, flooding towns, and destroying numerous homes.

Indian officials say that 14 people were killed in the storm, though they believe that the country's preparation may have spared them the large-scale loss of life that many were concerned about. The cyclone was the strongest to hit India in over 10 years. In 1999, a cyclone that hit the same region killed thousands.

Winds were well over 100 mph when the storm hit land, causing extraordinary damage.
