Defense Secretary Hagel Urges Restraint in Egypt

SAUL LOEB/AFP/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) -- Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel reached out to Egyptian Defense Minister Abdul Fattah al-Sisi by phone Tuesday to discuss the security situation in Egypt and urge restraint on the part of Egyptian security forces while dealing with protests, the Pentagon announced.

Bloody street protests in Cairo and other areas this past weekend left more than 80 people dead and hundreds of others wounded.

Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said the defense secretary and al-Sisi “discussed building on European Union Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton's visit to Egypt and the need for an inclusive reconciliation process.”
