Fire Erupts After a Tanker Train Derails in Canada

Scott Barbour/Getty Images(ALBERTA, Canada) -- A huge fire erupted in Alberta after a tanker train derailed on Saturday.

About 100 people from the village of Gainford were evacuated. No injuries were reported.

But now, the firefighters who have been battling the blaze have decided to withdraw and allow the fire to burn itself out.

According to Parkland County Fire Chief Jim Phelan, officials expect the fire to take at least another day to die down. "The area has been evacuated, it's secure and we're just allowing the product to burn off. How long that is going to take at this point in time, we're only able to speculate, but I am suggesting at least 24 hours, if not longer," Phelan said.

The incident has raised more questions about rail safety following July's derailment in Quebec that left 47 people dead.
