Hagel Calls Russian Defense Minister over Volgograd, Olympics

US Senate(WASHINGTON) -- Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel spoke with Russian Minister of Defense Sergey Shoygu on Saturday to discuss the recent explosions in Volgograd and their impact on the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

Hagel offered the Russian minister condolences for the recent attacks, which killed 34 people. According to a readout of the conversation, the two men discussed the need to remain vigilant against similar attacks.

The U.S. Secretary informed Shoygu that the U.S. would be willing to provide security assistance for the Winter Olympics if requested.

The two men also discussed the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons stockpile and the importance of adherence to the agreed-upon plan.
