(TEHRAN, Iran) -- Hassan Rouhani will be sworn-in as President of Iran in a public ceremony on Sunday.
Since he won June's election, Rouhani has advocated for bringing moderation back to Iranian politics. Rouhani wants to lift what he calls the "cruel" sanctions imposed on Iran by the international community, according to the BBC.
But he is more than a politician with a liberal outlook- he is also a legal scholar and theologian. In the 1990s, while serving as deputy speaker of the Iranian parliament, Rouhani studied at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland, the BBC reports.
"From our discussions, I ascertained that he had a modern and reformist approach to Shariah law," one of Rouhani's supervisors, Dr. Mahdi Zahraa, said.
Rouhani's thesis, "The flexibility of Shariah (Islamic Law) with reference to the Iranian experience," is still available at the university library.
