India Taking Sanctions Against US over Treatment of Diplomat

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- The Indian government is taking steps to punish the United States after one of its senior diplomats was detained in New York.

The Indian government will freeze the duty free import of food and alcohol for U.S. diplomats in India and reviewing work conditions for all Indians employed by the U.S. State Department. On Wednesday, India's Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid told the Indian parliament that "it is no longer about an individual, it is about our sense of self as a nation and our place in the world."

The Indian government is upset after a deputy consul general at the Indian Consulate in New York was arrested and allegedly strip searched. The deputy consul, Devyani Khobragade, was accused of visa fraud and making false statements about how much she paid her housekeeper.

Asked about the steps taken by the Indian government, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf called the arrest of Khobragade an "isolated incident," and that lines of communication would remain open with India.
