Iran Claims Warships Getting Close to US Waters

Stocktrek Images/Thinkstock (file photo)(TEHRAN, Iran) -- In what could best be described as a tit-for-tat move, an Iranian navy admiral claims that his country is sending warships close to the U.S. maritime borders.

If what Adm. Rezayee Haddad says is true, it would mark the first time an Iranian fleet has actually approached American maritime borders, presumably in response to U.S. vessels in the Persian Gulf.

The U.S. Navy’s 5th fleet is based in Bahrain, which is across the Persian Gulf from Iran.

Responding to the report, one Defense Department official remarked that that the Iranians have "made these claims before but never executed them."

The official added that all "ships are free to operate in international waters."
