Kurdish Group Believed to Be Behind Izmir Car Bomb Attack

DHA/AFP/Getty Images(IZMIR, Turkey) -- A policeman and a court worker were killed in a bomb and gun attack in the Turkish city of Izmir on Thursday.

BBC News reports that two attackers were also killed in the attack, and a third is still being sought. The Kurdish group PKK is believed to be responsible for the attack, Izmir's Governor Erol Ayyildiz said Thursday.

In addition to the two people killed, seven more were wounded, Ayyildiz said. He also said that the attackers had Kalashnikov rifles and grenades.

Turkish cities have been targeted recently, both by Kurdish militants and by ISIS.

BBC News says that the attackers on Thursday drove a car to a courthouse entrance, sparking an argument with police. The attackers then detonated a car bomb.

According to BBC News, the PKK is fighting for an independent Kurdish state within Turkey.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday that the country is "under mutual attack by terrorist groups and they want Turkey to be brought to its knees." Still, he said, "they won't be able to set people against each other. They couldn't destroy our unity."
