Polish Pup Could be World’s Smallest Dog

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- In a world where everything seems to keep getting supersized, man’s best friend keeps getting smaller.

First there was Beyonce, the tiny pup who fit in a tablespoon at her birth in March and at two weeks old was just the size of an iPhone.

Then there was Milly, the pint-sized Chihuahua from Puerto Rico who had to be fed with an eyedropper when she was born in January and stood at just 3 inches tall at three months.

Now meet Meysi, a tiny Terrier from Poland who weighed just 1.58 ounces at her birth three months ago.

Meysi’s owner, Anna Pohl of Jarocin, Poland, told her local newspaper she didn’t think her dog would make it and that it took all of Pohl’s strength to keep Meysi going.

“The worst was the first six weeks,” Pohl, who fed Mesyi with a syringe, told Gazeta Jarocinska, according to a translation. “[I got] zero sleep. I was feeding her day and night, every half hour. Sometimes I ran out of strength, had to call out of work.”

Meysi grew to her current weight of 3.25 ounces but is not expected to grow much more, veterinarians tell Pohl.

That means it could be a real dog race, literally, when she, Beyonce and Milly all meet the required age limit of one-year to be considered for the title of World’s Smallest Dog by the Guinness Book of World Records.

The competition will go down to the whiskers as they face off against the current titleholders, a long-haired, female Chihuahua named Boo Boo from Kentucky who is the smallest living dog in terms of height at 4 inches tall, and Heaven Sent Brandy, a female Chihuahua from Florida who is the smallest living dog for length at 6 inches “from the nose to the tip of the tail,” according to the Guinness World Records website.
