(VATICAN CITY) -- Pope Francis showed his support Saturday for the safe rescue of the Nigerian schoolgirls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram nearly a month ago.
A tweet from the pontiff's official account, @Pontifex, joined many others, including first lady Michelle Obama, in tweeting the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls. The tag has become a rallying cry for people fighting for the release of the girls.
Let us all join in prayer for the immediate release of the schoolgirls kidnapped in Nigeria. #BringBackOurGirls— Pope Francis (@Pontifex) May 10, 2014
In her first weekly address, the first lady said she hoped the girls — who risked their lives to get an education — would serve as an inspiration for American students to work harder and appreciate what they have.
Since the girls went missing, the hashtag has been shared more than a million times.
