Pope Makes Appeal for Peace at Weekly Appearance

VINCENZO PINTO/AFP/Getty Images(VATICAN CITY) -- In light of recent events in Syria, during his noontime prayer in St. Peter's square on Sunday, Pope Francis made an appeal for peace.

The pontiff called for a day of prayer and fasting in Syria, the Middle East and the world on September 7.

Francis condemned the use of chemical weapons, but came out as a proponent of a negotiated settlement, as opposed to military retaliation.
